Tractor hauling advice

Depending on what kind of places you go in, I'd go 5th wheel or bumper pull. I do a lot of work like what you are describing and some places it's hard to get to with a 5th wheel. Just how they follow.

It's always amazed me how a bumper pull will go so many more places forward, but a gn will back into so many more places.

Then you start getting the bubbles in the sidewalls. I finally figured out it was that side load pressure was causing separation.
Just cause you can, don't mean you should.


I prefer a gn usually, but gotta be aware of all the factors.

I hate changing tires, and I'm even pretty efficient with it, just expensive anymore.

In my experience, scrubbing tires in a bumper pull isn't much less common.

I'd rather pull a GN in almost every situation, but for 99% of my use a bumper pull is more convenient so that's all I own anymore.

I move equipment in the 10k range on a daily basis, I prefer the gooseneck setup but for a couple short trips a year on decent roads a bumper pull would be just fine. The biggest things are get a trailer heavier than you think you need and longer than you think you need. 14k would be my minimum rating and 20’ would be my minimum length. Ideal would be something 16k rated and 24-25’ long. Being maxed out on weight and length all the time can be a problem, I did it for many years before I finally upgraded.

If you decide to go gooseneck make sure you get one with a high enough neck too. I have one right now that only lets me go down certain roads and into certain driveways otherwise I will crunch my trail gate or box sides. I ordered my dump trailer with a 6” height extension on the neck and it is a huge difference.

I like tilt trailers the best but I’m not a fan of power tilts. Loading a machine on a frost or ice covered deck and having to jump off to power down the bed can cause the machine to slide off in the process. It would have to be a remote style setup for me. I currently am using a trailer with ramps and my next one I will go back to a hydraulic tilt that is gravity down or one that has just a hydraulic beaver tail.

Put my L4701 with a 5' RTP genisis (or 3 row JD 7000 planter) on my 24' Load Trail and run it back and forth across Wisconsin a couple times a year. Trailer is 24' long with two 7000# axles. When I was buying a few years ago there were other fancier trailers/models but for the 2 or 3 times a year I use it it's perfect.

DONT get a 16' trailer.... If you ever hook up a brush hog to it it wont all fit on the trailer with a front end loader.

I would go gooseneck with dovetail. However, you should also consider renting before buying no more than you will use one. I bet the companies around you that rent equipment, rent trailers.

There are a few, but no goosenecks and nothing over 20ft.
