Hey guys I just did my first backpack hunt ever. Turkey hunt. First thing that went through my mind was where can I cut weight? 🤔
Just very curious what other guys sleep sysyems weigh. Bag, shelter, pad, pillow.

Tarp, stakes, quilt, pad, bivy, pillow, comes in at about ~55oz (3.5lb) not counting the trekking poles because they are dual use.

This combination covers a lot of my hunts. I have a few options that I substitute that are heavier or lighter depending on conditions and seasons.

Bag: 35oz Feathered Friends Lark 10 degree
Tent: 39oz TarpTent double rainbow
Pad: 13oz Thermarest NeoAir
Pillow: 2.8oz Sea to summit aeros
Total: 90oz or just over 5.5 lbs.

X mid 2 solid: 2lb 4 oz
Wm terralite 25 degree: 1lb 15 oz
Thermarest x lite: 1lb
Therma rest airhead head down pillow: 7 oz
Total: 5lb 8 oz
Pretty comfy set up. Temps were between 40/70 degrees this past weekend.

Got me thinking about a quilt not sure on brand and a single man shelter the Durston x mid 1 pro. Next hunt is a archery elk hunt, really like the the idea of hunting with camp on my back but wanna be as LIGHT as possible.

Run your current X-mid fly only and save a pound? Your current gear is pretty light!

Z-packs and the pros are both awesome but $$$

My light solo hunt setup is similiar

I don't know if im ready for no floor yet lol?
The x mid pro is only 15.5 oz. Kind of wish I would have went that route, but wanted the mid 2 incase I have one of my kids with me.
But I solo hunt mostly.

Bag: Mountain Hardware Phantom 15 long 2.2 lbs
Pad: Neoair X-Lite: 0.7 lb
Tent: Seek Outside Eolus Dynemma w/ 6 stakes 0.9 lb
Eolus nest: 1.4 lbs
Pillow: Sea to Summit 0.2 lbs or Nemo Fillo 0.6 lbs
Bivy: Borah 0.4 lbs

Somewhere between 4 and 5.8 pounds depending on my pillow choice and how bad I expect the bugs to be. I just got the Nemo pillow and I think the comfort will be awesome but I'm not sure how often I will bring it along.

Can't imagine not having a pillow. Why not bring it?

Varies summer through winter, but early season hunting I use a TarpTent Aeon Li - small footprint, decent vestibule, relatively storm worthy, bathtub floor, full netting for 19 oz with stakes/guy lines. It’s the sole reason I’ve moved away from a tarp/bivy combo.

Early season bag is a Feathered Friends Flicker a rock solid 30 degree bag—21 oz.

Pad is a Thermarest XTherm 6.7 r rating—15 oz

S2S Aeros pillow 2.5 oz

So 57.5 oz, 3.6 lbs for a pretty cozy setup

Yeah floorless and tarp and bivy never sounded like the thing for me. I was checking out that tent, was also looking at the durston x mid 1 pro.

Back in the day if you wanted a shelter anywhere near a pound, tarp & bivy was the only way to go. When Dyneema (cuben fiber) hit the market—it was definitely a game changer

My lightest solo system:

Shelter - MLD DCF Solo Patrol tarp with stakes, cordage, and Zpacks Solo+ bathtub floor. in a DCF stuff sack @15.2 oz. (Trekking poles not included).
Pad - Small Thermarest Xlite @8 oz.
Bag - Gryphon Gear 40 quilt/straps @ 18.2 oz.
Pillow - Big Agnes AXL coupled with GooseFeet down pillow @ 6.2 oz.
Total weight = 47.6 oz.

Second lightest solo (shelter big enough for two), system used for colder/harsher conditions:

Shelter - SO DCF Silex with stakes & cordage, in a DCF stuff sack @ 18.6 oz. (Trekking poles not included).
Pad - Regular Thermarest XTherm 15.3 oz.
Bag - EE 10 quilt @ 20 oz. or El Coyote 20 quilt @ 25.5 oz.
Bivy - Borah Gear DCF @ 4 oz.
Pillow - Same as above.
Total weight = 64.1 - 69.6oz. depending on which quilt I use.

So z packs, tarptent, and durston have dyneema 1 person shelters. Thinking about a quilt even though I just got a wm terralite. Goal is to have this stuff in my pack everyday just in case I don't wanna hike back to the truck in the dark, if I plan on hunting the same spot for elk in the morning. Im sick of hiking back and forth morning and night.

Drop the tent for a light weight tarp. I use a stone glacier skyair ult. Mine weighs 11 oz with bag and stakes. You dont need a floor or bivy. Bring one of those bug nets thats only big enough for your head if youre planning on camping in a mosquito swamp.
Also quilt instead of bag.
Youll be 3.5 lbs
If youre going to be out for a week no matter what the weather then id consider a floored shelter or bivy with tarp.

Tarp, guyline, and stakes are like 21 oz.
Sleeping pad is 23oz
Quilt is 23oz
I either have a Borah bug Bivy or SO Matty McMat so that’s like 5 or 8 ounces depending on which I use.

So about 4.5 pounds.

That is for down to 20 degrees. If I did more summer hiking, I’d probably invest in a lighter quilt and sleeping pad and could easily shave a pound.

I have a hammock system with underquilt that is almost identical weight and for same temp range.
