Top rated muzzleloader bullet?

I have used them for deer. Even with kid loads there was always a short recovery and a good blood trail. We used the 260 gn.

They are great. I buy them up when I can.

For what it’s worth I have a problem with muzzleloaders. I can’t get enough. I will shoot different bullets just to try them out.

This past weekend I shot 2 different Encores with 26” barrels. I tried the 250 gn Tradition Carnivore(I wasn’t impressed) with 78 gn by weight of BH209. Neither gun liked them. I could have tried different powder weight but that is what I had.

I also shot the Harvester 300 gn white lightning with 84 gn by weight BH209. Using the crushrib sabot( a little snug). One encore shot an 1” group and the other 1.3” group.
Also it seems all the encore muzzleloaders I have seem to like a 300 gn XTP with a crushrib sabot over 84 gn of BH 209.
777 works also with 110 gn by volume.

Probably a good problem to have. Options in this day and age with the supply chain issues is probably a good way to operate

No excuse and Thor both make awesome bullets have killed bulls with both. If you go with one order a sizing packet to fit it to your gun. Personally I’d built the gun to be legal in the most primitive state you could see yourself hunting in some state require lead only I’d take that into consideration

I’ve got a muzzleloader deer hunt here in Colorado in September. Just ordered some Thor bullets and I’m going to use that to really get my gun and confidence rocking then take that To New Mexico

Pro Hunter is designed to shoot sabots. I recommend using them. No excuses and Thor are designed to be full bore projectiles. That is why they have a sizing kit.

I shoot No Excuses in my full bore Oregon legal muzzy. They shoot crazy accurate. I did see some inconsistent bullet hardness between weights with them. I have not followed up with NE on that yet.

I shoot saboted bullets in my Pro Hunter with good results. Most recently the Nosler 300 grain Ballistic Tips.

Dumping all the energy into the animal so about 1100 ft lbs
Perfect shot in the heart.
50 cal / 250gr bullet was probably near 100% weight retention
Animal dies from trauma and goes 50 yards.

My pro hunter really likes the Barnes TMZ 250 grain. I’ve killed a pile of animals with it and has never let me down.

Surprised no one has mentioned The Bull Shop bullets for bore sized all lead options. Website is meh, but they make great killing bullets

1) Was the bullet deformed at all ? Confirm no mushroom at all? and no petals pulled back ?
2) Was it the hollow point version or tipped ?

Now granted I only muzzleloader hunt 2 weeks per year, GA and FL each has one week and they're usually back to back weekends. The best load I've found is with T/C cheap shot sabots and 2 triple 7 60gr pellets..deadly on our southern whitetails and excellent accuracy out to 150 yards.

It was the tipped 300 grain version and it did open up into 5 petals.

Thor for sure. Get the size pack to custom size to your gun then order a 50 pack once you know your size. Awesome expansion and weight retention. Great results.

My gun is between a .500 and .501 so I get .501s and use sandpaper to size them down slightly to .5005 and the are perfect.

Thors were accurate out of my TC but not impressive on game performance. I shot a 200 pound black bear at 20 yards and didnt get a pass through. When I found the bullet it never really opened up. Luckily the bear was hit perfectly and only went 50 yards. If I were to hunt elk I'd use one of the No Excuses bullets.

Did you use the hollowpoint or the ones with the ballistic tip? The ballistic tip helps start the expansion quickly

Had the opportunity to test out the Thor bullets this weekend. 156 yards, one shot.
All I have to say is thanks to everyone who convinced me to try them. I don’t think I’ll ever shoot anything else. Now for elk season!!

I hunt Colorado mostly so sabots are out. I’m sure they work good though!
