Top 5 Food bars while backpacking

Snickers, jerky, Almonds with chocolate chips, Tortilla PB&J, and GU with caffeine. Just discovered Mocca Shots gummies. Not all bars but my go to snacks.

Just looked up the David bars. Their website advertises them the same way hair products are displayed for women??? Very interesting tactic
My wife’s a hairstylist so maybe that’s why I like it 🤣🤣🤣. Now that I went and paid attention to it you’re right, the website is not marketed to men at all. The bars are legit though.

I'm packing the highest cal/oz bars I can find while hunting. My favorites are:
-Power crunch
-power crunch pro
-YES bar
-Perfect Bar

Been wanting to try the Keto Bricks

If going strictly by taste, I don't know that you can do much better than pop tarts, snickers, reese's, almond joy, etc but those are more candy than a bar.

Probar
Belvitas with hazelnut butter packet smeared on them - don’t know what it is about that combo but it just works for me
Oh and the guilty pleasure - pop tarts

A lot of convenience food snack bars are bullshit frankenfood and full of ultra processed garbage.

Larabars and Aldi Larabar knockoffs (apple pie and peanut butter flavors) are just date / apple and nut bars according to their labels. I also like to snack on apples, trail mix and homemade jerky.

I tried the Epic meat bars. They're kind of expensive and not that good. I can turn out some jerky better tasting than Epic bars in the cabinet smoker at home.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I see those Epic bars everywhere around here so I tried one and it was just nasty.

Have any good jerky recipes?
I do something similar to this with Mortons tender quick instead of Prague powder. Then I put it in the cabinet smoker for about 4-5 hours until it has the right consistency.

It's a very basic recipe but can take that and add pepper flakes to spice it up. Swap honey, sorghum or molasses for sugar. Swap fancy balsamic vinegar, apple cider or soy sauce for red wine vinegar. There is room for experimentation to make it your own and find something you like.

How long will jerky keep at room temperature? If vacuum sealed

If properly stored, pretty much indefinitely. it may not taste so awesome after enough time passes, but still safely edible. You can also freeze it for long term storage. I read a story about some anthropologists who sampled some pemmican that cam out of a ~500 year old cache found in the tundra.

Good stuff. I’ve got some chunks of meat in my freezer maybe my most cost effective thing is to make some jerky. These bars look good but man some are pricey!

I eat the epic venison bars and the quest white chocolate raspberry. The epic is clearly just meat, the quest bars have 20g protein, only 1g sugar and 4 net carbs, and 13g fiber which you dont get enough of in the back country. Eating one of each is a reasonable meal.
Not sure I understand the epic bars. Might as well just bring jerky.

Quest bars look like a good find, though. Most folks don’t get enough fiber *ever* - let alone in the backcountry eating cliff bars and mountain house.

I like the carb balance tortillas for fiber and protein, too.

Yea would not be nutritionally much different than jerkey, I guess you could just look at it as soft jerkey.

Yea the quest bars are the best way I have found to get a decent shot of fiber out there short of packing in avocados.

Oh, I see - more like summer sausage or pepperoni.
