@wildernessmaster

Feel like we need some resolution here. What did you find out? Was it the gun or the operator? Or did you find a bunch of dead deer?
Don’t forget the supernatural possibility... My money remains on a loose screw impacting things somewhere during the process.

Wilderness master is posting about archery targets and ignoring this thread. Looks like no closure for us.

Not surprised... I sincerely hope he fixes the problem or starts recovering his wounded deer.

So this is the great mystery to me:

Shoots doe at 200 yards two weeks ago. Dead.

Shoots at 3 deer, no recoveries, and his theory is the bullet is zipping through? What killed the doe two weeks ago?

So, lets say the one two weeks ago was killed with a different bullet, and he is now questioning his new bullet choice. But, he also says the gun hasn't been checked for zero? After changing bullets?

Which is it?

Maybe I missed it then, what makes the doe two weeks ago mortal to this round but not the last 3?
The last batch of deer could have identified as elk which would explain why they were never located; the bullets just bounce off of them due to them being bulletproof since they are now "elk".

A more likely scenario is these deer watched "Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker" and learned how to "Force heal" one another.

Definitely not too much bullet.... killed plenty WT with a .308 until I started using a 300wm... same size just faster. The temporary wound channel is important on rifle rounds and deer. Moving to fast will still cause the look of a hit and if anything more reaction as the shock to the organs is more powerful. Check in order... ammo, mounts , scope, bore.

Yea, looks like OP abandoned his rifle hunting career with all of the bloated dead deer laying around. He decided to start bow hunting, so at 10:48am this morning he started a thread on the Archery Forum about making a backstop for his bowhunting practice. I hope he finds his way through the quagmire of hunting conundrums, or he learns how to shoot-either one of the two would be nice.
I'm sure he will find bow hunting much more manageable than rifle hunting (eyes rolling). Nothing to it.

I hope if he is bow hunting he is using rage so they will die quickly even when hit in the guts.

Somebody should tag Steven Rinella in this thread, he's another one that needs to learn the importance of verifying a zero and drops at distance.

I started reading this with genuine interest in what happened.

Then the chest thumping and counter accusations began.

Then the insurgency brought the weight room ... and I laughed.

Thanks for the entertainment. But, also, go check your zero and pick up those deer.

I generally try to be helpful but after reading a lot of these threads, patterns seem to develop. In most cases when people get piled on in here it is for a reason. Sometimes it's poor communication, others it's an overly defensive poster and some just put a bullseye out there because they like all the attention that follows. I'm not trying to be mean here but you sure seem like a magnet for getting piled on and I have to assume you enjoy it because the pattern repeats itself. Not trying to upset you but I think clear concise communication without the defensiveness might help these threads.
Thanks but what I have found is that from the very first post I posted here on RS that there was a lot of drive by answers just wanting to pick a fight or find flaw. So at this point in time I am just blunt in my responses and punch back to those who decide to fail to read (or just plain ignore) write something stupid. It doesn't seem to matter if I am as non everything and nice - there are those who just wanna be phalluses.

(im) patiently waiting.

@wildernessmaster did you find any loose screws?
No loose screws...

No dead deer... Two of us went back in for nearly 6 hours and scoured the 6'ish acre patch that the 30 yard deer (actually all of them) should have died or left some signs in. We also saw no buzzards or other signs of dead life.

Haven't had a chance to re-check the zero, although I am betting (but will come back here and let you know) that it will punch accurate and precise holes. My dilemma originally with just doing that (checking zero) was my facilities to do so weren't available and there were only 3 more days in the season left. Otherwise to EVERYONE's point I would just have done that.

My belief at this time... I rechecked my ballistic charts I had calculated on the load. Again not chrono'ed just basing it on box load data and what a typical 308 looses relative to barrel differences. My under 30 shot could be up to 1.5 - 2" high if I plus the velocity slightly. That said, I also may have been shooting "too" high of shoulder based on anatomy. Either way I believe for now I missed.

On the longer shots after walking them both again, the incline was probably steeper than I thought and combined with the ballistics being a little bit hotter than what I thought and a "too" high shoulder shot probably another miss.

Shooting high shoulder with a gun is a new thing for me this season. I normally shoot in the pocket behind the shoulder, but given the perimeter I was working in, thought a high shoulder shot would be better to avoid run aways. The one I did kill I aimed behind the shoulder not high shoulder.

For the record my original post was not to blame the bullet, but to see if anyone else had had issues with that size/speed bullet on thinner bodied deer. I had limited time to figure out what to do and kill a few deer in the few days left - and no range (or even valid place to accurately shoot the gun and check it). And it has been raining like hurricane season most of the time.

I don't like missing deer, wounding deer, or otherwise. I dissect every possibility when I do.

You have not dissected the gun and if it was safe enough to shoot at 3 deer it is safe enough to hang a target and quickly check 0.
