To Wyatt’s box or not?

I currently have a rem 300 RUM at the smith getting a new barrel along with some other work. I’ll be shooting 215 bergers, 225 Eldms and a larger Barnes for a big brown someday. Since the rifle’s at the shop I’d like to maximize the RUMs potential, but is it really worth the work? I’m looking at the Wyatt’s cfe-9 and UMs DBM that should get me to a Max OAL of 3.95 or so. For those that have done it, what route did you go, and is it really worth it? An extra 100fps is nice, but I’m not sure that’s enough to justify the work.

A new ultra mag barrel is always exciting.

Keep in mind the cfe-9 is center feed, and cannot be loaded from the top like a factory internal magazine. You would have to drop the floor plate and load from the bottom.

I have doubts that a tiny amount of extra space is giving 100 fps of additional potential - the amount of additional case capacity freed up by seating the bullet a tiny bit longer just isn’t that much.

I’m not hotrodding my Ultra Mag, so others can speak better about those kind of details.

I cant comment on the velocity increase because I added the extended box prior to handloading it. I shoot 215 Bergers out of it now and use all of the extra room the box provides. To me it would be worth it

Mine have the cfe-9 and I wouldn’t own one that I don’t put one in. It gives me options to seat the bullet close to the lands and still repeat. I don’t see it getting 100 fps the case will pressure out before it’s full with Retumbo or N570 in ADG or R-P brass. To get 100 fps more it would need to be +P by DE. Mine with a 215 are ~3.9 coal and .015-.020 ol. The cfe-9 is loaded though the hinged floor plate just incase you weren’t aware.

It says a lot when everyone who does it says they love it and would never be without it. Seems like the cafe-9 is the way to go, or has the UM DBM just not been available that long?

The availability may have been one thing. I think it boils down to which aesthetic you prefer. Having to load a floor plate through the bottom may not appeal to you. On the other hand, you may not like the look of a DBM.
