Titanium mirage

I have a stainless supressor but am looking for a titanium one to save weight. While doing research, everyone mentions that titanium heats up quicker. Some folks even said they see mirage off the can after just 1 shot.

So, how many shots have you fired through your titanium suppressor before noticing mirage? How many shots until you would feel ethically shooting a critter?

yes this is a thing but not until shots 4,5,6 depending on ambient temp and depending on what cartridge. remember that with any suppressor its going to appear to be way worse on high magnification. A good suppressor cover helps mitigate the problem but the best thing is to not shoot at 20x mag.

Another thing I will do next time I need to sight in a rifle from scratch is shoot unsuppressed to get it very close and then fine tune with the suppressor on. I feel it would simply speed up the process.

My scyth ti on a 22in 7mm prc gets mirage after 2 rounds and is some times visable after 1. By 3 it's very obvious. I will need to get a supressor cover.
This was my exact fear. I feel like if I have a supressor cover then it defeats the weight savings of titanium...... I was also looking at the scythe.

I see mirage after 2-3 but use a chamber chiller to cool it and the barrel down pretty quick. Hunting with one won't be an issue, if it is, you have other problems.
What kind of calibers are you flinging? Good to know that you can do 2-3.

Yeah, my fear was that I would spend all this money on a titanium supressor and then get a cover and be heavier than a stainless option

I think it depends a lot on which suppressor you select as well as if you are running a big magnum or something more mild. My 300 win mag/7prc produce way more mirage more quickly compared to 6.5CM and 5.56.

The scythe is a tubeless design vs. the thunderbeast ultra 7 that I have. I am not sure exactly how that plays into how and when mirage might appear but I think it has something to do with the many reports on here of the scythe coming apart when used on short barreled magnums...even though silencerco advertises it as having no barrel length restrictions.

My Scythe heats up and has mirage by about 3 rounds. Just use a cover - order the one from LS Wild. Great price and super light weight.

Every thing is about trade offs. If you want a ultra light supressor then your going to get mirrage faster. You can mitigate with a cover if needed but how often in a hunting situation are you shooting 3 to 5 round strings?

There’s a big difference in the heat generated between something small on a long barrel and something big on a short barrel.

3 shots on a 16” 22 creed is hotter than 10 out of a 24” dasher.

Fwiw I don’t use a cover when big game hunting but do for everything else.

Light, thin suppressors will heat up faster than heavy thick ones. They will also cool down faster. Use a cover and then take it off and use a portable camping fan and/or a chamber chiller and it will cool it down and push mirage at the range. While hunting I don’t think there is a SS suppressor that can weigh the same as a light weight cover added to a Ti suppressor of the same size and volume.

This^^^

How fast suppressor heats up all depends on caliber, powder charge, barrel length, scope magnification, ambient temp/differential, etc.

If someone says their system heats faster and another slower, it’s best to know those factors.

My Rem 700 Varmint in 6.5 CM wears a Jolene S at the end if its 26” Sendero contour barrel. I get mirage after 4th or 5th shot on my Athlon Ares at 30x. Since putting on a Cole Tac HTP cover, I have gone as many as 39 shots without mirage. Don’t sweat the issue. Just buy a cover.

I have run my OCL Hydrogen K on a 24" 6.5 PRC ad a 18" 6 CM. Definite increase in mirage compared to other cans. I can usually get 2-3 shots before it starts to become an issue.

I use a homemade ghetto wrap with vet tape and carbon felt at the range and take it off while hunting.
