Tipping a fishing guide

When I had my own boat I had a couple regular guys that I fished with. They were self sufficent. Occasionally I would take other guests. I found out what kind of work it was to be a guide and my guests probably didn't have the same expectations as a paying customer. There was a lot of behind the scenes effort that they never saw. It was all just a nice day on the water.

I guess it depends on the situation. When I guided, I owned my own boat and had a deckhand that worked for tips. We cleaned and packed their fish together and they would tip him when they settled up. If they didn't tip him well, I would pay him out of my end. If it's a captain or crew working for a someone else's charter service I would think 10-20%. If its an independent guy and no crew, I would say tip if you feel he deserves more than what you paid.
