The whitetail hunting season is broken into archery, rifle, and muzzleloader, in the state of Maine. Before the rut, (generally in late August through mid-September) the bucks hang out with one another usually in a large field full of green grass. This creates a fantastic opportunity for any bowhunter who is looking to bag a nice buck. Usually, they will enter the field 1/2 hour before sunset and exit 1/2 hour after sunrise, so get out of bed. The first day for archery is usually the best because they haven't been hunted in over 9 months. The rifle season starts about 2 weeks away from the rut. The bucks have broken up and are in groups of 2-3. Later in the season they follow the does but are much more clumsy about stepping into the open or walking by a house. Overall whitetail hunting is a fun and engaging sport that everyone should try at least once.
