I have a Steens sheep tag in my pocket. I have never felt so ill prepared for a hunt in my life. Typically don't put in for tags without having a game plan, but I also wasn’t really planning on ever drawing a lower 48 tag. Just kept playing the game and found a lot of luck! Anyways, I’m looking for photos, advice anything really to educate and prepare myself as much as possible in the next two months. There’s a lot to accomplish. I’m all ears for anything you feel will be beneficial!

Wow. Congratulations. I haven't been in the Steens in years but last few times I was in there it wasn't hard to find sheep if you have good glass.

Sounds like finding them isn’t the issue. Navigating the terrain and finding a mature ram seem like the biggest challenges

Lace ‘em up tight!

Seriously though, excited for you dude. Just having a chance to hunt sheep in your home state is a blessing, throw that pack on and head up the front range to get in shape!

Sit in on the seminar ODFW offers for tagholders. Reach out to the Oregon WSF president and run through your plans; good group of experienced guys who also maintain records or who, when, and where for most of the state.

And congratulations for sure!

Get a pack list organized and start getting stuff. Make sure it's all functional weeks before the trip so you can buy new if needed. Heavy rucking couple times a week for an hour or so, some zone 2 light/moderate hiking on the other days. Get a day or two with some moderate resistance training lunges, squats and stuff. You'll still not be completely prepared but will make the hunt a lot easier. Good luck and congrats!

Adding in that you can order some pretty good unit specific maps from the Harney County GIS folks - I find them more readable than say a commercial RAM map retailed in sporting good stores. Internet search them if you want something paper to see the overall hunt unit, general ownership and roads [Hint: be sure to order the 'old' hunt units map as they also started producing the new mule units too].
