The altitude in the last two years has become a pretty big adjustment for me.

Depends on where you're hunting at, if you're hunting early it can payoff. Not so much later in season.

Should be okay, usually better with an early start to elk season.

Usually at timberline in the trees is where most encounters I have are. I hunt high or low wherever the elusive wapiti are

Yeah, and like others said, mostly early in the season is when elk will be there. Although, I have also seen elk take refuge in high pockets that few people get to when the hunting pressure increases during rifle seasons.
