Timber vs Open/Pinyon Pine habitat

I’ve consistently hunted elk in your typical thick timber where glassing isn’t really conducive and on the ground scouting or calling works best.

That being said, I have a couple of new areas that I may give a go but they’re in the more open, pinyon pine, oak brush country. Any tips a guy could get besides glassing? For example…do they tend to bed in shaded hillsides or draws similar to desert mule deer since there isn’t that dark timber? Is calling still a go to tactic in this type of terrain like timber? My experience with this type of landscape leads me to believe there won’t be an abundance of water outside of major creeks or drainages. Obviously this is weather dependent so probably even more so on drier years. So, water may be key…

If you prefer one habitat over the other, I would be interested to hear why you lean that way. Anyone with experience chasing elk in this type of habitat, can PM if not comfortable sharing publicly. Thanks in advance!
