If a guy had a stainless t3 in 7mm rem, what would you suggest a rebarrel to? Want to keep it light and handy for packing my me and horse. No need for 7mm mag. Elk and mule deer 600 yards and less

Well that’s certainly a fine choice as is...

For conversations sake you can go one of two ways... commercially available and wildcat.

Commercial i would vote
300 wsm
6.5 prc

Wildcat
7saum

Those would be my picks in a tikka action.

300wsm, use a billet magazine from hells canyon or mountain tactical. My rifle is throated for 215 Berger hybrids. Cartridge overall length is 3.17". They go 2910fps from a 23" barrel and a stiff charge of RL26. Good enough for anything in N America. Well I'd take 338 or 375 something if I was after brown bear.

Same caliber, tighter twist for heavier bullets. Maybe the SAUM or WSM if you wanna mix it up some.

Magnums- I have a 300 WM Winnie that shoots 200 gr ELDs and NABs very well. For me, it is heavier than desired for mountain hikes.

I have a chance to pick up the lightly used tikkler for a good price and was wondering if a rebarrel could find a cartridge that would minimize twist and coal restrictions. The 7 saum w/ 180s or 300 wsm with 200s or 225s might do. I don't want to have to mess with bolt stops, etc.

On the other hand, so far, I haven't shot anything that a 308 or 7-08 couldn't have handled.

Your Tikka is already set with the LA bolt stop so you won’t have to mess with that no matter what cartridge you choose. 7-08 is awesome.

Wrong boltface for 7-08 but that would make a handy light rifle for deer and moderate range elk

Absolutely! If you did want to go that route (or another non-magnum) You could find someone looking to trade a standard bolt for a magnum bolt.

the tikka is almost perfect for short magnum type cartridges... 6.5 PRC or 300 WSM would be my picks. Both would do fine, just depends on what your preference is. A 6.5 PRC with a 22" barrel would be a handy gun... buddy did one that shoots 156's at 2900 FPS.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I was thinking 7 saum or 300 wsm so need to decide which or better, perhaps, which bullet.

7 SAUM with a 22' HCA tube was my choice when I was looking for the same thing as you last year. Less umph than a full house 300 WSM shooting 200+ grain pills and I feel better about taking it elk hunting than my 6.5 SAUM.

7's are a nice place to be. High BC, moderate weight pills that don't punch ya like a 30 will to get the same ballistics.

Not what you want to hear but I’d leave the rifle as is and use the money for stuff that actually matters, like optics, boots, gas and/or tags.

You are probably correct and I wont make any modifying an already adequate rifle. Always looking for improvement. I already have several good rifles. Looking to save some weight if I do another one.

What’s the old adage about rebarreling, “don’t shoot the donor”? I wouldn’t rebarrel a proven shooter like that one. If you want something lighter, sell the 7mag and buy a lightweight.

Thats not the potential donor, its my 300 wm.
Without cartridges and a light scope it is a bit over 10 lbs. Unlike shotguns, my rifles are Th always a work in progress. Donor is still at a dealer waiting for me to trade.

Ah gotcha. Have you decided what you’re rebarreling to? Since you’ll have a mag bolt face the 6.5 PRC seems to make sense. Or one of the Nosler cartridges could be fun.
