You can rent the gauges you need pretty cheap on the net if you need them. I headspaced my 6.5 PRC that’s a tikka action and an xcaliber barrel and nut system it was pretty easy and it turned out nice. The nut doesn’t look to bad at all. You have to go after the stock with a dremel a bit because of the nut but that takes about 5 min or so.

So the common question is why? Well at the time I did it you couldn’t get a 6.5 prc on a tikka so I went about it myself. It’s a 21” barrel shooting 156 bergers. The results are in the picture that’s a 3 shot group.

What twist rate did you get? Can't decide between a 1 in 7.5 which seems to be ideal for the 156, or a 1 in 7 for a possible future monometal on my 6.5 PRC build.

My barrel is an 8 twist. No issues stabilizing the 156 I live and shoot at 1000’ so I would imagine it would would be fine anywhere

Curios on what powder and charge? 3000'/sec is fast for a prc w/ 156, let alone a 21" barrel. I just got a 24" 6.5 prc barrel installed on my Tikka last week. I have adg brass and pretty much every slower Magnum powder available.

I worked up to 58.3 grains of RL26 in Adg brass. I felt that was getting a little warm so I am running 58 grains of rl26. Bolt lift is easy in my gun and groups are good. I will probably shoot the load for a little bit unless I start having issues but I don’t expect to.

I am about to build/put together a first rifle for my 9 year old daughter so she can hunt when she turns ten. Looking at finding a tikka and running a proof ss 6 creed prefit. Cut it to 22" and put it in a compact stock.

To me, there is too much slop in a prefit barrel. You are already spending hundreds, maybe more. Just get a blank and let your smith cut the threads EXACTLY to your action. I've seen and felt the difference, my smith changed my mind real quick when this was shown to me. The only thing you gain is the satisfaction of doing it yourself, and you better hope you did it right. It's a lot like buying factory ammo that is saami spec. No way am I doing a prefit with much wider tolerances when I hand load to the thousandth or some cases half thousandth.

When I am ready for a new barrel I will buy two and they will be threaded and reamed at the same time so load development between the two will be very near the same

Finally got my prefit on today. Did it “mostly” myself at a gunsmiths place. Outside action wrench with a 4ft cheater bar and it came off pretty easy. Torqued on the new barrel to 70 ft lbs and it headspaced perfectly. Waiting on rings to show up then I’ll get out and shoot.

I have a Preferred Barrel Blanks prefit on order, going with the nut so I can swap if I wish. Local smith is spinning off the barrel much cheaper than I can even buy a good barrel vise.

That's great for folks who can afford it. What do you say to the guy who bought a prefit and it shoots better than he needs it to?

Would like to hear what you think of the prefit from Preferred when you get it together. I’ve had my eye on them for a potential future build.

Looks good, it says a lot about the consistency of Tikka actions that they can even time the barrel engraving
