Tikka CTR AICS mags

Price and availability. Until the recent re release of CTR 223 rifles in the US, CTR mags were unobtainable. If you managed to find some they were expensive. In my experience the 223 CTR mags were not super reliable, occasionally the last couple of frounds didn’t feed. No big deal till you’re in a match that you’ve driven 3-4 hours to shoot and paid an entry fee.
You can always get AICS mags and they’re easy to tune if needed. Once I quit using accurate mags and started using MDT if haven’t had to tweak one.
FWIW I’ve never been able to get the 223 poly mags to work reliably. Feed lips are too thick and once you sand them down enought to half ass fit and feed they don’t retain your rounds very well.
Good points I definitely haven't considered or realized. Again, I'm playing around with brand new 223 mags at the moment. So my time and understanding is limited at this point. Thank you for the explanation. It very well may save me some time and frustration in the future if mine stars to wear out/fail.

My 223 CTR is one of the best rifles I’ve ever owned. Customs included. If I was starting over I’d buy a 223 CTR and 20” 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor CTR and call it good.

I will add and say my experiences are with .308/6.5/.243 CTR mags and modified MDT. I have no experiences with the .223 ctr mags.

All my ctr mags and the two modified 3rd mdt mags have functioned without hiccups with several hundred rounds of .243.

The ctr mags fit almost flush with the trigger guard and to me that's a pretty big advantage over aics mags.

I like being able to use both types and would have no qualms modifying cheaper aics mags.

In the case of the 223 ctr, I would make the modifications to allow for the cheaper mdt mags for practice and have a few of the ctr mags on hand to use as well.
