I purchased a Macmillan Stock for my 300 WM. Deciding what bottom metal to go with. Red Snake, Mountain Tactical and Atlasworx are ones I have been looking at. My worry is the magazine release lever looks like it would be easy to bump and loose a magazine while hunting. Any thoughts on this? Also open to suggestions on any I listed or any other brands.

I've been really happy with my RedSnake. Although the lever on it is larger, it has been more secure than Mtn Tactical or factory for me.

I have a hells canyon with the long mag release and I ejected my mag a few times by bumping it with my hand. i prefer the flush style similar to the factory. Never accidentally ejected a mag with the factory one on 3 rifles.

I sold the Atlasworx one I had for that reason...the mag release sticks out and would definitely be a potential issue on a hunting rifle. Losing a mag is no fun. I grabbed the Mountain Tactical OEM style and it sits flush with no mag release protrusion.

Used Lumley arms bottom metal on my build and the magazine release is pretty discreet. Haven't hunted with it yet but I don't see it snagging very easily, in fact it may be a bit small for gloves.

Thanks for the input fellas. Can you find a bottom metal that will take a longer magazine that is still close to the OEM build? I am currently shooting hand loads, and the OEM magazine is to short.

What chambering?

If you’re already changing the bottom metal and want a longer mag maybe going the ACIS route would work for you

Going to a longer mag as in more bullets isn’t a must, but would be nice if possible. Seems like I am always busting through brush or crawling around getting snagged on something. I would hate to go with a longer mag if it really increased my chances of a lever being tripped. But I may have no choice if I need one one that will hold a longer cartridge.

I meant longer for bullet length, don’t quote me, but I think you can get a little longer bullet in the ACIS mags.

If you justed wanted more capacity they do make tikka factory 5 rounders

Any of those bottom metals you referenced should hold an aics mag, length of 3.7" and change, not the ~3.8" mag. You'll need a smith to machine part of the trigger housing but you can load up to 3.6" +/- if you also notch the feed ramp a little bit.

I had the mountain tactical, looked great and functioned, but the magazine release had a pretty weak spring and a light touch would drop the magazine - tried to find a stiffer spring but came up short. The magazine was also a little sloppy in the mag well (excess play left to right). I moved to an atlasworx which was actually quite a bit cheaper and the mag release is much better but I hear you on the length of that lever. Unfortunately the mag is still a little sloppy left to right with this model as well but it's better. Haven't tried redsnake

I had the RedSnake and it was a quality machined piece, the accuratemag fit very nice and snug. Spring was nice and stiff but the lever was a little bulky.

However in all the research I did before ordering that conversion I never came across that key little piece you mentioned about notching the feed ramp out so the tip will clear. I inletted the new stock, installed it all, loaded the mag, slapped it in, saw that sh!t and said I'm done. Sold it all and restarted with a BDL 😆

I use an aluminum unit from High Desert Rifle Works. Looks just like the factory trigger guard and takes Tikka magazines. It just makes the rifle feel less “plastic”.
