Loading for my dad’s Tikka 6.5prc at mag length. 147eldms 58.5grn Staball HD is only getting me high 2700s. Even this slow I’m getting heavy bolt lift and a few primer pockets are leaking around the primer. Using Winchester Magnum primers. Anyone have a good experience with Staball HD and 147s? Groups were good enough but factory 143eldx were getting 2900 average.

Do you know how many rounds are on the barrel and what your distance to the lands is?

I do not know my distance to lands, I just load to max mag length. And only about 150/200 at best. Barrel speed up was a thought but the eldx was shooting normal speed so I kinda threw that out.

Yeah, that’s a good point on the speed up. I was thinking that or maybe to close too the lands. Do you have the COL for a factory round to compare to a mag length round? Can you take a factory round and pull the projectile out to mag length? Or pull and reseat it? That would tell you how much your dropping in velocity from the extra room in the case. I haven’t loaded up and HD yet, so no idea on how it shoots compared to book. Could just be slower than advertised.

Pulling out the factory round is a great idea actually. I don’t have my book infront of me for the difference but if it’s alot I may try it.

No. The numbers you have are spot on for that cartridge and my experience with staball hd. I could see the same velocity with 156 Berger, 140 Berger, and 143eldx and that powder. A switch to n565 resulted in more logical numbers.

I was sad because I like how all the Staball powders meter, they used to be cheaper than alternatives, and seem much more available.

Match has been working out better in my 223 in both velocity and accuracy without being compressed compared to varget
