I have a new tikka varmint in 6.5cm that comes from factory with a ~24" barrel. It's getting a bravo chassis and primary use will be shooting steel from 400-800 occasionally further. Secondary use will be coyotes and pdogs. Load is going to be 140 eldm handloads. I have a thunderbeast ultra 7 that will accompany it at all times. Terrain is very open and the gun will never be carried more than 1/2 mile to a mile at most.

I voted 20” because 18” was not an option.

An 18” barreled tikka varmint in 308 is one of the best rifles I have ever owned. That rifle has been all over the world- including backpack sheep hunts. Don’t limit yourself to a half a mile from the road!

I am not limiting myself to 1/2 mile. I have other weapons to fill the backpacking role and I use them frequently.

If you are threading for a can, the answer is 2 questions. What is your max distance you plan to shoot it on game and what minimum impact velocity does your bullet require to upset? I have one cut to 16” and it still has enough speed at 700 yards with a DA of 6000’ to upset the bullets I’m using. If you’re not threading for a can, the answer is how important are your eyebrows and your ears?
