Tikka 300 WSM….What bullet for Elk?

I was wondering what bullets you guys are running out of a stock Tikka 300 WSM. Looking at hunting elk with this rifle. I really want to shoot Berger but I am open to other options.

I really like the Barnes TSX on tough game. If my rifle didn't shoot those well I'd go with a Nosler partition. Both in the 180-200 grain area.

Big fan of the lrx vs ttsx. The 175gr lrx gets my vote out of a wsm every day. Wasn’t too excited with the vlds performance on whitetails in both 185&210, so I went back to barnes. Good luck this season!

Don’t shoot a tikka, but do shoot a Kimber Montana in 300 WSM. 180gn Barnes TTSX over 65 ish gn of 4350 pushes them dang near 3000fps. Last two bulls both under 300, did not like them. I can get them to shoot sub moa out to 500.

I like the Federal Premium 165 TSX out of a 300 WSM. It’s not a “long range” bullet but is a hammer above 2200 fps impact.

If you are going long, the Hornady Precision Hunter 200 ELD-X is hard to beat.

If you load your own… Hammer Bullets have a good reputation.

I’m a huge fan of the TTSX. My 300wm freaking loves shooting the 180grain TTSX and I’ve never had to track an animal further than 25yds with it.

I shoot Bergers out of my Tikka 300 WSM and have killed an elk at 350, and a handful of deer ranging from 40 yards out to 450. I've been impressed with how well the Berger performed on each animal.

HSM 185 or 168 Bergers. I've killed my last 5 elk and 1 mule deer with 168 Berger's out of my 7mm RM. My Sako A7S and Tecomate in 300 WSM both shot the 168 and 185 Berger's a little over .5.

Longest I had an elk had run after being hit (only one) was 50 yards and I center punched him at 489 yards in his bed with an exit. Small 5x5 got up and ran 50 yards before tipping over.

Never used it in 300 WSM, but another vote for Accubonds

Nosler partitions are a favorite of mine as well. They're not sexy, but they're deadly. It would be my first choice, but not every gun likes them.

Growing up we used Grand Slams and Partitions, I think any hunting bullet that isn't built for rabid expanse with 165+ grains for the 300 WSM should be good medicine.

165 gr Grand Slams here or A Frames. I like the 165-168 gr bonded bullets. They will put a big bull down and shoot fairly flat .

Let me know how they shoot. I bought 200rds, mostly for the brass, but they shoot like garbage in the 2 rifles I tried them in.

my experience with the barnes 165 TSX out of a 300 win mag at close range has been pretty disappointing. Three for three on zero expansion penciling, even with bone hits (skull, ribs x5), at impact distances of 40, 15, and 95 yards. The deer have died, but the wounds resembled an arrow with a field point. If you must run lead-free, the LRX apparently opens up better.

But, basically any lead bullet will do the job nicely for you. accubond, partition, a-frame, gameking (180+ gr), eld-x or -m, interbond, interlock, bergers, whatever else you find in stock.
