I wouldn’t call myself a savvy gun guy, just have a growing collection that I use for hunting. I picked up a magnum tikka action and am planning to build a short barrel 300 WM but wanted to know if it’s possible to pivot and build a RUM. I’ve never seen or heard of anyone doing it. Experts please school me.
Cheers!

If you’re set on a 30 caliber magnum in a Tikka action you’d be better served with a 300wsm due to COAL restrictions.

That said, don’t be in a hurry to make a bad decision.

Bullets matter. Recoil does too.

Lots can get done very efficiently with way less powder.

I sold my Tikka in 300 Win because of the mag length restrictions with heavies. RUM is even worse. Honestly I’d look at a 7PRC or a short mag variant for a short barreled Tikka. That’s a where the Tikka shines for hand loaders are those shorter cases that allow heavy bullets to seat well. The 7 PRC will be great in that action.

If you run a la element chassis you have 3.570 I believe in the magazine. I have a 30/28 nosler in this tikka configuration.

I wouldn't do a RUM or WM on a Tikka action. As has been mentioned, a long throated 300 WSM is a great fit and will be an excellent performer. My factory throated one moves 208s along at 2925 fps. A long throat +P could probably push the 215 hybrid really close to 3K with a 24" barrel.
SAUM, WSM, 6.5/7PRC and Sherman based cases are the sweet spot for the Tikka action.

As someone that doesn’t reload does it matter WSM Vs WM on bullets and COAL

Factory ammo for WM tends to be more consistent and with a greater options.

Factory ammo only a 300wm would be fine. If wanting to maximize 30 cal in a tikka, 30 nosler. PRC and RUM are just really long cartridges, i wouldn't want either in a tikka.
That's the same reason I did not go with a Sako S20 in 300WM, you can load longer than factory ammo with it, but mot like my M700 Sendero. As mentioned, the Seekings long action is nice!

300 WSM or you could do 7 SAUM as the 7 WSM is dead. Really the Tikka rocks in a plain old 7mm Remington Mag.

Max COAL for the 3.560” magazine is listed at 3.470”. SAAMI length for the 28 Nosler is 3.340” while the 300 RUM is 3.600”. So, I would say a hard, “No!” for a 300 RUM in a Tikka. However, I do like the idea of a long throated 300 WSM.
