What's everybody's thoughts on the 22 creedmoor for a 300 yard and in coyote deer and bear rifle. I'm wanting to build a light weight low recoiling rifle that's not heavy to pack around. Will mostly be used for coyote and deer but also the occasional bear if they are in season. I will have a no farther shot than 300 yards. I'm going to get a Ruger American gen 2 with the 22 inch barrel just the base model gun pretty much, I'm wanting to put a 4-12x44 or a 3-15x50 Leupold or vortex I'll probably get a Magpul hunter stock and leave everything else the same other than the stock. What's everybody's thoughts on that or should I get a different caliber like .243 win or 6mm creedmoor. Keep in mind low recoil and lightweight. TIA
I recommend taking a look at the 22 Creedmoor thread and the .223 kills thread. I think a .224 caliber will readily do what you need it to do, but I have no firsthand experience with it.
In my state, the minimum caliber requirement for deer and other big game is .243. So, I prefer a .243 over anything else. I recently bought a Tikka 1:8” twist .243 for a very decent price from EuroOptic. I will be using it instead of a beautiful old Sako. And, assuming it shoots some of the heavier bullet options well, it may make some of my old reliable .257 options even more redundant. Even if it doesn’t, those 95-110 grain .243 bullets are excellent deer killers (I’m sure that others are as well, but I haven’t used them.).
Since you asked for thoughts, I’ll add that I would not look for a scope with that much magnification, especially for 300 yards and in. I’d also recommend seeing what you can get from SWFA for the same price point. I’m up to an even dozen SWFA scopes now. Four of them are the $350 fixed 6x (relatively hard to find), which I used a lot this past season. The fixed 10x and 3-9x40 are also excellent.
Additionally, if you want a lighter scope with illumination, the Trijicon AccuPoint 3-9x40 is a rock solid option at around the $650 mark. For a set-it-and-forget-it scope on a woods rifle, I don’t think it can be beat. I just remounted mine on a Sauer 100 last night (also from EuroOptic). I can’t wait to use the combination next year. Under $2000 for rifle, optic, and suppressor.
