What's everybody's thoughts on the 22 creedmoor for a 300 yard and in coyote deer and bear rifle. I'm wanting to build a light weight low recoiling rifle that's not heavy to pack around. Will mostly be used for coyote and deer but also the occasional bear if they are in season. I will have a no farther shot than 300 yards. I'm going to get a Ruger American gen 2 with the 22 inch barrel just the base model gun pretty much, I'm wanting to put a 4-12x44 or a 3-15x50 Leupold or vortex I'll probably get a Magpul hunter stock and leave everything else the same other than the stock. What's everybody's thoughts on that or should I get a different caliber like .243 win or 6mm creedmoor. Keep in mind low recoil and lightweight. TIA

No experience with the 22 creed but I do know that the OG magpul hunter stock is heavy for what it is. I do think they came out with a lighter version fairly recently though.

The 22 Creedmoor is great for coyotes and can work on deer with proper bullets and shot placement, but it’s pretty borderline for bear. If you want low recoil and more versatility for deer and occasional bear inside 300 yards, a 6mm Creedmoor or .243 Win is probably the better all-around choice. Your rifle and optic setup sounds solid either way, just comes down to how much margin you want on bigger game

I wouldn’t want anything less than my 7mm-08 or similar for bear, especially at 300 yards…but I wouldn’t be shooting that far. Plenty of lighter options and hardly any recoil on a 7mm-08. I would rather have too much gun than not enough. But I have lost a big bear before and know what it takes to kill them quickly.

I recommend taking a look at the 22 Creedmoor thread and the .223 kills thread. I think a .224 caliber will readily do what you need it to do, but I have no firsthand experience with it.

In my state, the minimum caliber requirement for deer and other big game is .243. So, I prefer a .243 over anything else. I recently bought a Tikka 1:8” twist .243 for a very decent price from EuroOptic. I will be using it instead of a beautiful old Sako. And, assuming it shoots some of the heavier bullet options well, it may make some of my old reliable .257 options even more redundant. Even if it doesn’t, those 95-110 grain .243 bullets are excellent deer killers (I’m sure that others are as well, but I haven’t used them.).

Since you asked for thoughts, I’ll add that I would not look for a scope with that much magnification, especially for 300 yards and in. I’d also recommend seeing what you can get from SWFA for the same price point. I’m up to an even dozen SWFA scopes now. Four of them are the $350 fixed 6x (relatively hard to find), which I used a lot this past season. The fixed 10x and 3-9x40 are also excellent.

Additionally, if you want a lighter scope with illumination, the Trijicon AccuPoint 3-9x40 is a rock solid option at around the $650 mark. For a set-it-and-forget-it scope on a woods rifle, I don’t think it can be beat. I just remounted mine on a Sauer 100 last night (also from EuroOptic). I can’t wait to use the combination next year. Under $2000 for rifle, optic, and suppressor.

What bullets have you had success or lack of success with in your 22 creedmoor?

If your state allows it the 22 creed would be an excellent choice. Very fun cartridge to shoot/hunt with! Only down side is shorter barrel life, if that is an issue for you. I haven’t shot a bear with mine yet but on fur bearers the wounds are pretty nasty with the 80gr eldm. Also works great for deer!

Lots of data on the 22 creed thread regarding barrel length/velocity with various factory loads.

Black bears arent hard to kill, any deer cartridge will work fine. 22cm will work fine. 243 is super popular for black bears even in the land of wool and 3006’s. If you dont reload finding 22cm ammo might be harder than something else, but functionally would not hesitate.

I cant imagine it would have any challenge on any animal in north americal within 300 yards, or even double that. Whether it has any advantage over 223 within 300 is debatable other than maybe a little longer point blank range.
