Thoughts on my own CWD situation

My heart goes out to you. It's a lousy spot to be in after a successful hunt. Please make those calls to FWP, they deal with this regularly and will guide you through the process. Good luck.

Does the processor guarantee your own meat back? Including the meat in the sticks and sausage?
Doesn't really matter if they do. It's very unlikely that the cleaning processors do would remove prions from their equipment.

If you have regularly eaten deer in that area, you are just giving yourself a reason to worry. I wouldn’t test it because you’ve eaten a cwd positive deer before.

Did you eat any of it yet? If you did, it's too late anyway. I would just eat it. We have it in my general area, and I've never had any of mine tested.

I have a hard time buying into the cwd crisis. We took nodes in for testing and asked the bio about the spread as Washington state is apparently the epicenter of the area. She said so far no positive tests, but last year was "really bad". They had 3 positive tests that came in from all the animals that year. This sounds fishy to me.

That is pretty weird. There shouldn't be anything other than an increase year over year.

....and we had another huge die off of whitetails which should have spiked the numbers.

I wouldnt worry about it but thats me. I dont plan to test any deer unless mandated. I grew up in the Eradication Zone when it hit WI. Ate lots of deer and never tested one.

Yeah, but you’d have to consume such tissue or somehow ingest the bodily fluids. Hence why handling usually isn’t an issue with the proper ppe/care, but ingestion is more concerning

So I am not an expert on Prions but I thought one of the big concerns is how its nearly impossible to wash off of anything? Isnt bleach the only approved cleaner to kill them? Sure if you wear all plastic shit and bleach the room and tools I guess its fine. I have never worn extensive PPE to mess with a deer head.

The meat on the other hand I thought has in detectible levels of prions.

I butcher a deer right when I get home but put the full head in the freezer double bagged until I get results back.

On the other hand I may not be correct on the best theories on risk here, and they may also not be right so who knows. I dont get overly worried either way.

Bleach won't cut it.

Papers written on the topic require 1N Sodium Hydroxide and a very specific autoclave cycle at higher than normal and much longer than normal temperature and pressures.

I don't know any butcher shops with an autoclave.

Looks like Prions from deer have recently infected Humans. I was surprised too...
As much as I am wary of CDW infected meat, that's not a study, it's an article reporting facts. It's also not proof of the jump. I agree with it's conclusions and think we should study every single instance of CJD and that should include if the person hunted or ate wild deer.

Don't miss this very important line - "Although causation remains unproven,"
