Thoughts on going from Tacoma to Tundra

I have had Toyota’s pretty much forever and have always used them for hunting. My current truck I bought new and is the only new truck I have ever purchased is a 2019 Tacoma DCSB with a 6 speed manual.
I had a Tacoma with the 6 cylinder and 6 speed manual as well. Bought new. Worst truck I ever owned. Couldn’t wait to get rid of it. Turned me off to Toyotas altogether.
Now I stick with the Chevy 2500 series trucks none of the AFM and other fuel saving/ pollution BS. Have friends with Tundras that love them

You won’t regret going to a full size one bit!

I had a '19 tacoma and went to a '17 Tundra. Wouldn't go back.

The extra space and power is a quality of life changer for me. The Tundra on a 2.5" lift and 35s get's me everywhere I need to go (including all the gas stations :ROFLMAO:)

Forgot to mention…it’s worth looking for an 18-21 Tundra that has the bigger 38 gal fuel tank.
But if you find your dream truck and it has the smaller tank, Transfer Flow makes a 46 gal tank that fits in the factory location.

I moan about the 38 g tank only when I fill it. I love the range. I’m halfway through this tank and I’m at 18.8 mpg. Not bad.

I went from a tacoma to a Tundra. Wouldn’t go back. The only thing the tundra gives up compared to a Tacoma is maneuverability off road. Hard to see over the hood on hills and it’s wide, so you’ll get scratches on jeep trails. But overall it’s been a great truck.

My older truck is a diesel with 52 gal tank, which makes it easier for me to fill up the Tundra with 87.

I have had Toyota’s pretty much forever and have always used them for hunting. My current truck I bought new and is the only new truck I have ever purchased is a 2019 Tacoma DCSB with a 6 speed manual. I only drive it on weekends and for hunting due to having a company vehicle. When I do need to drive in traffic etc it pretty much sucks to drive. Now I am starting to look at Tundra’s this is what my wife thinks we should get. I am only really interested in 2018 to 2021 with the V8. Will I regret the change to a larger truck? Let’s hear your positives and negatives. This truck will be mainly used hunting and trips back and forth over the cascades. Truck will see a lot of dirt logging roads and lots of scratches due to the places I like to go.
Thoughts? Opinions?
I may be in the minority, but unless I’m towing something heavier than my taco can pull, I don’t like driving our tundra. I had to pawn it off on my wife, it was supposed to be mine but I much prefer midsize pickups, for many reasons

All good information. Maybe I need to accept change and start going down the tundra rabbit hole. Any other must haves like the 38 gallon tank? My Tacoma has a 2-1/2” Bilstein /Deaver lift, canopy, aftermarket front bumper do to a deer and an OTT tune. And many many scratches.

Hell I dont like how big the new tacomas are

Really depends on where you are going, what you are doing, what color the truck is and do you care about it.
Fact is, that you can cram a cclb pickup the same places you can with that tundra.

@NateO 77,
I don’t think you’ll regret upsizing. I currently drive a 2011 Tundra, and before it I had a 2007 Tundra. Both 4x4 with the 5.7 engine. Both have been great trucks! Unfortunately, I’ll need to upgrade by the end of the year, and it’s time to go to a 3/4 ton. I’ll probably miss the Tundra.

Nope, no AFM , or VVT none of that. My 2015 2500 with the 6.0 liter was bullet proof, I’m in a newer 2500 with the new L8T 6.6 liter. Thing is a beast.
...I was gonna....but Im not gonna derail...good luck. Glad you like your 6.6l hope it does well long term.
As for Taco to Tundra...Advantage tundra in all aspects other than serious off roading and fuel economy. 38 gal tank and non flex fuel would be ideal. They have their quirks and some issues that may arise like anything, but long-term reliability is unparalleled and major powertrain/drive line issues are far less common than any other half ton even when not well cared for...but if you ignore a problem or keep driving an overheating engine or run out run a fluid empty your gonna have expensive problems on your hands like you would with anything else. They arent indestructible by any means if you overly neglect or abuse them...at least that's my experience.
If your gonna be loaded in the bed or on the hitch frequently...you will want upgraded rear springs. Definitely a weak point.
Personally I'm glad they get sub par fuel economy, keeps alot of folks out of the market for them. If they got low 20s mpg they'd cost even more cause a whole lot more people would be looking for them.

I still consider my Tundra to be a midsize pickup. Here it is next to a fullsize pickup at Costco, and my '89 Toyota 4x4 xtracab is my compact pickup. My Tundra has the same size tank as my '01 F-350 (38gal) but the F-350 gets quite a few more miles per tankful......especially around town.

I always wanted a new Tacoma to replace my '89 some day, but they've made the Tacoma's vertical height so short from the bottom of the window to the top of the cab, that it's hard to even get in them. And when I do get in, the seat doesn't go far enough back, my head is touching the roof, and I can't see out the windshield. I'm 6'6". So from that standpoint, I had to go to the Tundra. But I hate the automatic transmission. Wish it was a manual.

I've only had half tons for the last 20ish years, no way could I be happy with the space in a taco. Crew cab 6.5' box f150 gets full in a hurry as it is.
