Thoughts on cow elk?

Thanks for the input, guys. I know how to get a tag. I just wondered if one state is kind of a no-brainer for cows. Sounds like the answer is not really, although getting a tag OTC is very appealing, so I'll look into that. The prospect of an archery hunt is also intriguing. I have heard that shooting a cow with a bow can be really tough, because you can't call them in like a rutting bull. I can see that becoming a frustrated hunt. But worth looking into. Again, I appreciate all the comments.
If you know how to get a tag why did you state the regs are so confusing?

Cow hunts can be frustrating on public land. There usually are a bunch of cow tags issued with lots of crazies driving up and down roads. There is a reason harvest rates are low on many of these hunts. If you have the $ I would make sure to do a hunt on private land.

I'm not aware of a state with OTC cow tags. Cheap, easy to draw and lots of leftovers, but not OTC. Happy to be corrected, obviously.

OP, I recommend you apply for a type 6 or 7 tag in WY. Connect with an outfitter first and they can walk you through anything you need to know.
Interesting post here for me, as I dropped in to look for exactly this. I booked a trip this week and entered the draw yesterday for a reduced price cow/calf type 7 in unit 106. Trip is booked with R&K.
3 of us entered on a party draw. I actually have two trips booked now with them. The group of guys I hunt with in MD and my cousin in WV have a 2027 bull elk trip lined up with them for Oct. 2027 provided we draw. The cow hunt came up on my radar recently. Entered this one with my cousin and his grandson. From what I understand, if we don’t draw the cow tag in WY, R&K has landowner tags available in Utah, albeit a few hundred dollars more than a WY draw tag.

If you’re looking for a guaranteed cow hunt go with a private ranch with high fence. Accommodations will be top notch and most likely cheaper than a guided hunt and minus the tag cost. There’s no way I would pay a guided cow hunt. But if it’s the meat your after I would go this route.

Have hunted cow elk the last 3 years in Montana, Wyoming and Colorado. Montana was a draw. Wyoming was OTC and Colorado was OTC. Not all that difficult to find cow elk tags with some research. Both WTA and Hunt Nation are booking agents and always have cow elk hunts available.
Are those two agents actually any good to use?
