Hence my iron sights question. I just acquired this beautiful, pre-1901 Mauser in 9x57. 6lb 7oz & an absolute joy to carry!











I cannot wait to hunt with this old beauty!

Not yet. I've got some very old load data from the previous owner though. Im assuming his load is worked to the sight. Luckily the bore slugged at .358, not .356 so bullets aren't a problem.

Awesome. I have an uncle that always used a rifle with open sights. I remember one year we were standing around a fire on top of a ridge getting warm after a morning hunt, and a single cow ran up the slope towards us. He jumped on his horse and took off and shot that cow on a full run with the reins in his mouth. You should be good to go.

Wait... how are you going to dial? There's no way you're planning to kill an elk without dialing?

I've yet to take it to the range, but i'm guessing from previous experience, that 200yds will be my absolute limit.

Heard that! 200 is a long way with irons. Good luck when you go, that thing has style points for days

I'll be honest, it was 200yds, 20 years & 3 prescription lenses ago! We'll see what happens once I get some dies! Im not sure I trust the 1950s reloads I have!

Classy rifle. I doubt you are handicapping yourself much. My average centerfire range on big game over 35ish years is well within 150 yards, probably closer to 100....
