Thinking about a 7 Saum

I have a 7 saum shooting 180 ELDM's. Just something about it I love. Might be it shoots very accurate. I also love the that it has plenty of horsepower for anything I need but doesn't beat me up. Just a joy to shoot. Tikka action with a 20 inch barrel and a Dominus can on the end.

175 elite hunter @ 2840mv, 22" barrel, long freebore
64.2gr N565, jumping them 75 thou, 3.125 coal
Abel theorem supressor
Shoots very well, several 5 shot groups under 2" at 400y.

The 7 SAUM is a unit. It makes a strong case for being the best all around cartridge for the lower 48. The caveat to that is, you basically have to reload. It has enough HP to be devastating for animals like elk and moose but mild enough recoil to spot your impacts. For me, those 2 things were key as I hunt alone sometimes.

21" PROOF
168 VLDs @ 2950 fps
SA Origin
9 lbs with a 4-16x42 ATACR

Ive killed elk, coues, columbian blacktail, muleys, and pronghorn all with the same rig. I have no intent to change. I like to tinker with other cartridges from time to time but when it comes to leaving with a rifle in the truck the 7 SAUM has been primary on every hunt.

Short action or long action?

I went the opposite way of most people, from a 7 prc to a 7 saum. The only thing I changed was the barrel and the brass. Both are great rounds, I just prefer the saum. I run a medium action.

Mine is on a defiance XM action, 3.2" in the mag box. I have loads for 180eldm,175 ELDX and 160 LRX. 22" proof barrel and McMillan gamewarden 2.0. with RL26 I get north or 2900 with the 175/180 or 3050 with the 160LRX. Its a fairly light rifle but doesnt beat me up to much. Its mostly a moose rifle for me, but works pretty well on deer too.
