The ultimate elk hunter needs partner

That depends on two things: (1) Are there actually 350"+ bulls where you're hunting; and (2) how you're calling. I don't actually start hunting until I get the response I want. Until then it's just hiking. So ya, sometimes it takes covering a lot of ground to find those big bulls that want to play the game.
That's fair. But have you ever had a day where you had to hike 20 miles till you got the response you want? Or even 10 miles the one way and you have 10 miles back to camp? And that's a truthful question, no sarcasm

I like to start out my elk hunts from the coffee shop in downtown Estes Park. I see lots of 360 bulls as I am hiking 20+ miles out of the Park to my hunt unit.

It’s hard to average more than a mile an hour hiking anywhere I’ve ever hunted when off trail…let alone including time to stop for calling or glassing.

You can’t hunt 20 miles in a day for elk. You’d have to just be on trails walking.

I was just thinking that too. It’s actually hard to average 2mph on a mountain trail with a 20ish pound day pack. He would have to be doing 3mph off trail to allow some time to call and glass.

No, I've been blessed to be able to hunt some great country where big bulls hang closer to the roads. The only time I hike straight line that far is when I have another vehicle parked at the end of it. Then I'll work my way along that entire route until I get action, put one down, or get to the vehicle. I do have one route like that that's 12 miles, yet is never more than 2-2.5 miles from a road. If I put one down, I just hike straight to the closest point of approach from the road.

I used to hike 20 miles a day trying to shoot the first legal bull I saw. Now I walk about a mile to kill the 360s. Smarter not harder.
