Being I have attained the hunting status of this thread, I root more and more each year for the bulls who have attained this status too. There are fewer of us old men nowadays.and I relish the challenge to match wits with the older mossy horns roaming the woods. We do get smarter with age ( my assessment , not the wife's) more picky, more wise to not make the same mistake twice, and more adept at expending energy only when necessary. And each year, I am reminded that as goes the number of "old man " bulls roaming the woods, so goes the rut. So far this year I've run into an inordinate number of rag horns still in bachelor groups and not giving a thought to finding a girlfriend. But, some miles away, there is an "old man of the woods" roaming around and it's a totally different scenario, where anything with a horn is playing the "Dating Game". For all the tips and tricks to increase your odds, or have a fun filled time of talking to elk, find an "old man of the woods" and he will be about his September work schedule, and making sure everyone else is too. And I will be about my September work schedule, which is to match my "old man wisdom" against his, And I'll lose many go rounds to him, may lose the battle, but he will make it worth every second, every ounce of energy spent.
