The 22 creedmoor thread

What is everyone using for .22 Creed prefits? Would be for an Impact 737. The Preferred Barrel Blanks seem intriguing for the price and they have 4 reamer options. Seems like a no brainer?
The PBBs have been excellent barrels so far. In .224 and 6mm specifically.

I’m really liking their .810 contour fluted. It’s an excellent comprise on weight/shoot-ability. More than enough meat to direct thread 5/8 for suppressors as well.

This is a 16” 6 creed ready to hunt but without the full mag of 115 bergers and a PBB .810 contour 7.5 twist. Reaper 6.5 suppressor. Rokstok. High desert bottom metal. Maven RS1.2 UM low rings.

It sits right in that “right at or just under 9 lbs” sweet spot of field carrying/shootability in all hunting shot positions for 6.5PRCish recoil and below cartridges (with proper stock geometry like a Rokstok).

Funny observations...

In the 22 ARC when using the 3 factory Hornady ELDM and ELDX loads (75m, 80x, and 88m) with my chronographed data, all 3 loads hit 1800 fps within 10 yards of each other. With a 10 mph wind @ 90⁰ their respective drift is 34.8", 34.2", and 30.9". Total spread of 3.9" at 660 to 670 yards. Is it really worth the mental gymnastics to try and get a specific bullet to work if another bullet that will give similar results on flesh can give you the same external ballistics? Not that I've seen...

I mess around with way too many different bullets and barrels to try and optimize an action for specific bullet. I can understand the perspective of those that do though.

I've found that some barrels just do not like some bullets no matter how bad you want them to work. I'd rather have the chamber geometry to shoot many types of bullets than be locked into a specific bullet class.

Tikka and Sako it’s nearly unheard of and is usually due to some other inherent issue.

I have had a 260 Rem barrel that wouldn’t shoot better than 2.5 MOA and a 300 Win mag barrel that wouldn’t shoot better than 3 MOA. They were both replaced with factory Sako barrels in Finland and they shot good after that. These are the only two I can recall in hundreds of their barrels spanning back a very long time with Sako specifically.

Something to keep in mind is most folks “accuracy expectation” is unrealistic nonsense but that’s probably for a different place to discuss.

Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

Let's say a guy already has custom rifles in 6.5 CM and a 6 CM, and you have a .223 for predator hunting, does one really have much need for a 22 CM ? As much as it may be fun to take another project on I'm not sure where it outshines anything I already have....

Run some numbers on 22 cm vs 223 for predator hunting. Once you do and decide that you're replacing your 223, you may as well sell that 6 cm too.

After thinning the herd to a 6.5 cm and a 22 cm, you'll realize that the 6.5 is a sloth.

Replace the 6.5 cm with a 6 UM. Perfection.

Having all of the above I’m leaning towards the 6CM being the Goldilocks and no real “need” for 22CM. The new 88gr TMK might change my tune on the 22CM.

The .223 is irreplaceable.

.223/6CM/.308 win after I wear out the 22CMs is kinda what I’m thinking.

22CM is fun though🤷

Predator hunting changes the game though. A coyotes vital area is 1/3 or less of a deer. And non vital hits really don't slow them down much. The difference in drop/drift in a .223 vs a 22 arc and 22 cm made me bench my .223 for predator hunting, day and night. Fast and flat is king for predators.

The 22 creed is fun and and a great round but I don’t think you are leaving a lot on the table with your current rifles. The 6mm creedmoor is a great rifle for coyotes as well.

6CM and 22CM are so functionally similar that they basically make each other redundant. Yet I still have two of each 🤷‍♂️

Yea I just got one of each then afterward was trying to figure out what eachs job should be. I guess I will call it a test for which I will stick with. Or maybe I just will need to add another rife to back fill.

It’s nice to have both because they both burn through barrels somewhat quickly depending on how often a guy shoots. So while one gun may be temporarily down the other can be used.

Also while field practicing it’s nice to bounce back and forth while suppressors and barrels are cooling down.

The increased splash on steel targets past around 800ish yards is noticeable as well with 108+ 6mm bullets verses 77-88 grain .224 bullets.

I’ll shoot coyotes with whatever I have on hand. 6mm hits them really hard. The 22 CM is no slouch though. 62 ELDVTs at 3650 sure works well.

The new 69 does too
