Could it be that the 88 is picky at Creedmoor speeds but more forgiving at speeds 200 to 400 fps lower?

I have a theory on this with several question marks written down in my notes…

Use a bullet that kills well and velocity trumps BC out to way past where most folks should be shooting at animals in the mountains.

I’d 100% prioritize what shoots well and become more proficient at making wind calls than I would fret over BC discrepancies.

77 TMKs in a 22 Creed is the answer in nearly all cases I’ve seen. A guy ain’t missing because of 88s versus 77s.

For whatever reason or good luck, I’ve had 88s shoot pretty good in my 3, 22 creedmoor barrels. On all three barrels it seemed like once I started pushing “pressure signs”, groups started to get erratic. More so than in the 6 creed, 25 creed, 6.5 creed, etc loads where I could be getting stiff extraction and still good groups. In line with Hornadys results on groups generally opening up towards max loads, but a bit more dramatic in the 22 creed than in other guns I’ve made loads for.

First 22cm barrel I had was 26” and the test loads were at like 2900fps but legit .5” 10 shots. First 5 or so into a tiny little hole to the point I had to walk up and make sure I was actually hitting the target.

It might* be that the 88s in general just don’t like to be run at the ragged edge, or anywhere near it.

Currently debating whether to sell my buddy a 6 creedmoor that shoots 109elds beautifully or start using it myself..love what my 22creedmoor is doing but honestly it is a little finicky and hard to trust.

I'm considering a 22GT barrel for my next build. I bought a Tikka CRT in 308 and want to have a 22 caliber barrel for it and a 25CM barrel for it too. I have 2 rifles in 22CM already but if the 22GT is as easy to load for as reported and allows more bullet options, then this is the perfect time to try it out. I don't want to be disappointed with a 22CM that is picky.

I know the 88 ELDM was produced before the 22 ARC was designed. If I remember correctly I was released shortly after the Valkyrie was released but not with the original cartridge release. The Valkerie shows a box MV of 2700 fps where as my 22 ARC is pushing the 88's at 2792 fps. These speeds are much lower than what people are pushing the 88's to with a 22CM. It just seems as though the 88's run better at a lower velocity for some reason.

Yes.

That's going to depend on the density altitude. Certainly not optimal at sea level, standard day.

If 88's were my goal, I'd get a 7.5
If I were shooting it in the winter at or below 0F near sea level and where the pressure regularly get over 30.50"... like Alaska, I'd get a 7.

If Ben was out shooting today with an 88 in an 8 twist, his SG is only 1.27.

Maybe I’m over thinking my 80 ELD-Ms that shoot great from the 22 CM barrel I have.

Give the 80eldms a chance. First load I tried after pressure testing shot great right off the bat in my 8 twist and shoot well from my 223rem 8 twist also. Running them 2950-3050 I’ve shot 12-15 animals with them from 75-365yds. Got a great blood trail every time but 1. They grenade the vitals doing serious damage, leave big entrance holes for blood to come out. And the base either sticks on the off side off the hide or just disintegrates by the time it gets to the offside. Stuff runs 50-100yds and dies with a great blood trail to follow.

Oh for sure. My 22 Creed killed a Dall Sheep at 585 yards and 458 yards this year with the 80's. Also killed a blacktail with them from my 223. 3170 fps from the 18" 22 CM and 2840 from the 18" 223.

The wound channels on all three were as you described as well. It's only trying to optimize for the last little bit of performance that started this evenings discussion.

A buddy built a 7 twist 223 wssm, had the 73 doing mid 3600s before we hit pressure and the bolt got real sticky real fast

2 whitetail does this weekend. 77 TMK at about 2950 (pics) and 3050 impact velocity. 18” 22-250. Honestly might be too much damage and I might go back to the 73 or 75 eldms. I have a bunch more of these though so will probably kill about 10 this year and then change next year if needed. The deer in the pictures I kept behind the shoulder and didn’t lose any meat. The other one I lost all of the onside and some of the offside shoulder.
