I’m not sure on what to load when my 22cm shows up, only a few more weeks. 17” barrel 1-8 twist. 77tmk or 80eldx? I have a bunch of h1000 I’d like to burn up.
Both those are pretty light to burn H1000, as is the short barrel. H4350/RL16 will be you're best bet.
Hornady data shows H1000 giving a 100 fps advantage over H4350 with 80 gr bullet in 22 CM

I tried H1000 in my 22in with 77tmk. I couldn't get enough in there to get it to outperform H4350. Rl16 along with full cases of N555 rl23 didn't he best, 3300+ fps. H1000 was 100-150fps behind these. Lapua brass, less capacity than HDY. H4350 moved 77s at 3275 at pressure, H1000 was around 3200 with a 12" drop tube and full case. Just my personal findings.

Edit*
Just looked at HDY data, they have a max for H4350 at 37.7 with 80, I went up to 42gr with Alpha brass in the new 18in barrel shooting 88s. Their max of N555 is 39.6gr at 3150 from a 24in, I'm shooting 43gr with 88s comfortably at 3100 from a 6in shorter barrel. Take the lawyer data with a grain of salt.

For the guys using Alpha 22cm brass, do you prefer the small rifle primer or the lrp? And why?

Runnig their SRP, case heads and pockets are stronger. Still utilizes large flash hole. Cci450 will reliably ignite even slower powders in subzero temps in my use experience. Lot easier to get SRP VS LRP currently.

Only problem with alpha brass, it's hard as F. Takes 2 firings for the base to get a lil memory to it and get enough diameter change to grip the chamber well. Not uncommon for first firing or two, may show ejector marks and light bolt lift from the case not gripping chamber and slightly over headspacign.

It isn’t “lawyer” data, it’s pressure tested real data.

The 22CM is ran at higher pressure by almost everyone (including me) than almost any other relatively common cartridge out there.
42gr of H4350 and an 88gr bullet is way over 65k PSI. Yes, maybe it works fine. And maybe it doesn’t. There are a couple rocksliders this year that have learned a lesson about previously “completely safe and fine” loads in 22CM that eventually bit them.

I forgot to add my triggertech special 2 stage froze up on me. Took a couple of mins get it free. When I first heard @Formidilosus talk about how un reliable Remington triggers were I thought he was full of shit. 2 failures in the last 3 years have made me realize I was just justifying the money I spent. Facts

Haha.

This is a common occurrence. I basically everyone I know have done the same… and then it happens to them. It usually also takes multiple times of it happening- generally side by side with other makes that work without issue; before they believe and understand that it is real.

I just tested H4350 at that pressure, I didn't intend to run it there. I'm sure my 43gr of N555 is well north of 60k psi as well. Everything is fine till it isn't. I wish they'd show the barrel specs they use on their pressure testing. 218 bore, or 219? I know it makes a big difference, as does 236 VS 237 in 6mm.

Yes sir.

And I wasn’t really writing at you- you seem like you know the deal; but more for the masses that say things like that and think that “no pressure signs” mean that the load is not over pressure.

Thanks,
I’d be happy at 3000fps and don’t plan on going over book data. I’m leaning toward the tmk

Can you elaborate on what the issue that came up was? Ie. what sort of failure, beyond a blown primer?

Hot but “safe” loads that became not. In one case it was weather that got him- rain and blown primers; and in another there didn’t seem to be any reason that also resulted in stuck cases and blown primers. The last one in all probability was also moisture, from sweating/compensation.

Yes- none of my three barrels shoot it under 2 MOA consistently. 2 of those is likely exaggerated by an issue with very short throats; one is a new cartridge that we have no data on to start.
Have you found a bullet that works well with something with a very short throat? I'm trying to find something that would work on a barrel that I might have to toss (gunsmith won't touch it since it's nitrided and would ruin his reamers he said).

To add to this @Formidilosus, if you could choose one bullet to shoot from a 22cm, would you run the 77tmk, 80 eldx, 80 eldm or 88 eldm?

I have a Form “Voldemort” 8 twist lite contour 18” barrel in 22 Creed and a Tikka 8 twist 19” barrel in 22 creed that both shot the 77 TMK the most accurately. They both shoot the 80 ELDX right around 1.2ish MOA average. This is minimum 10 round “groups” usually a lot more.

77 TMK and 80 ELDX terminal performance is indistinguishable but both are a slight step up from 73 ELDM.

If you load your own bullets I don’t see any reason to deviate from 77 TMK. I use 80 ELDX exclusively because the hornady factory ammo has been excellent so far from lot to lot. We will see if that changes as I’m moving to a new lot here in 100 rounds.
