The 2013 "No Mountain House Challenge"!

I see alot of folks saying "now they need to buy a dehydrator" . Dehydrators are nice and all, but if your on a budget you can dehydrate in your oven. Put the oven on its lowest setting, and crack the door open. Works like a champ. I used this method for 3 years before i bought my first dehydrator.

Keep us posted. I wonder how well those big beans will reconstitute?

Yes me too... but some MH have beans, like the chili mac, and they are OK to eat. Maybe me and the missus will share a package for lunch :-)

It makes sense but I had no idea. Lol. Thanks for the tip.

We just ate a package for lunch The beans were just great. The brown rice was still a bit crunchy. Maybe I was too frugal on the water, I'll add a bit more next try.
The taste was great too, I'll eat this any day over commercially done-up freeze dried.

I used the chicken and rice weight as indicated on the MH package as guideline for quantity... maybe I will add a bit next time, because the portion looked like it would leave me wanting after a hard day on the mountain.

So far I'd call this experiment a success!

Sweet! Thanks for the update.

Here's a great recipe that I had tonight. This is perfect for dehydrating. I'm going to add it to my list of backcountry meals.

Looks good!
One of my favorite meals around camp (car camping) is 2 lbs of browned burger mixed with busches original baked beans and sweet baby rays BBQ sauce served open face on bread or buns. Wonder how that might dehydrate...?

It would do just fine I would think. That's a good simple recipe by the way.

I can honestly say that I never would have thought that spending time accumulating recipes was something that I would be doing. Lol.

Ha well I enjoy cooking and coming up with my own stuff but I'm not very creative lol.

You should give that recipe a shot bet you'll like it!

I am on board too. So lets make it easy on ourselves. Post your favorite recipes on the Freezer Bag Cooking Thread under the "Cooking in the Wild" area. I am working to get it Stickied so it can be an easy reference when putting meals together.

What's THE best container for rehydrating? I'd like to see my Sol have a good lid system.

I going to use the OR insulated Nalgen Bottle cover. I used the Jetboil system system since they came out problem free all these years; I changed things up recently and went to the SOTO regulator and GSI tea Kettle (5oz) so much easy to pour. Rehydrate place the bag into the insulated OR cover zip it closed. The insulated bottle covers weigh next to nothing. When not in use store your stove, cup, spoon, spices etc. OR insulated cover are obviously padded so can be used to protect small electronic devices as well. Food for thought. Thomas

what is the motivation for "no mountain house"? there so easy i just dont see the point. sorry if im a little lat eto the party never payed any attention to this thread before.

My motivation for "no mountain house" is due to no longer eating wheat or soy, and as few chemical foods as possible.

For others it's money. They spend several hundred bucks a year on MH food so making their own saves money...but does take time.

Has anyone mentioned Hawk Vittles yet? Pre packaged like mountain house but with no preservatives and lower amounts of sodium than MH. I've been eating it for the last few trips and its good, takes a little longer to rehydrate than MH but still just as light and its dehydrated, not freeze dried. With my schedule I barely have enough time to smoke salmon during the summer, let alone dehydrate camp food. I'd love to do it myself but I just dont have the time so I buy the Hawk Vittles.
