Testing yourself

The Donner Party! HaHa Good Luck Bruce.

Donner Pass is very near where I was in the '82-'83 El Nino and I saw what they would have been stuck in...not good! Tree branches breaking under the weight of snow and ice. I even got caught in whiteout condition once...spooky stuff. Would not wanna be camping there this winter.

Interesting factoid: It was the women that survived in the Donner party. History says it was because the men were leaner, more muscular while the woman had more fat on em but I suspect (after 25 yrs of marriage) that the woman survived because they used to chewing their husband's asses out.

20 males and 24 females survived. However, only 8 females died compared to 28 males. Of the children under 6 years old about 62% died and 66% of males between 20 and 39 died. Quite the event.

Your trip should be educational and reveal a bit about yourself. Good luck.

I'm hoping to learn I can be very proactive, upbeat and able to stay ahead of the physical depletion that affects the brain. Thus the emphasis on foraging and maintaining some sort of regular nutrition. I suspect it will be something of a religious experience for me as I never feel closer to God than when I am surrounded by his work. And I'll have a DeLorme Explorer so now I just need to find somebody who I can send a message to and have em air drop some Krispi Kremes to our GPS coordinates. LOL

Your body and your brain cells will be a LOT happier if you simply divide the MH meals and have 1/2 meal each day. The net caloric effect is unchanged obviously. Your ability to scavenge and subsist will likely be enhanced. If you were actually placed in a survival situation I'm guessing this is how you (and most of us) would behave with whatever food we brought.

I've done some subsistence eating and it's a full-time job unless you put some serious protein on the ground. I think you'll be tested and you'll hopefully have a great adventure.

The goal is to see if we can actually survive off the land...the MH meals are a safety net we hope to not need however, I suspect they will all get eaten. Not opening the MH bags is a victory and we have lived off trout for days. I'm taking my Jetboil skillet and canned butter (presuming a campfire restriction which seems to be unending here). We're gonna try to have a lake stop every four days to fish.

Sounds pretty tough to me. I lost 6 pounds on a 9 day elk hunt this year while eating as much dehydrated food as I could carry. Every year has been about the same. Without a rifle to kill some real food I know I wouldn't make it 17 days.

Too bad you can't get the full experience if this is the case. I would be interested to try this with nothing but the camp comforts (tent, sleeping bag/pad, chair) having to build a fire for cooking, fishing gear, etc. This would certainly help you refine your first aid/emergency kit. Makes me think it wouldn't be such a bad idea to throw a couple fishing flies and line in my first aid kit as they are small and light and could possibly provide unending food supply.

The last couple years here I couldn't have started a forest fire if I wanted. The more popular trails do have fire restrictions around lakes in order to reduce impact, but other than that thankfully there haven't been any restrictions. Had to go without a fire a few times though due to a lack of dry wood. Took hours to collect wood to get the fire started.

The only problem with living off the land ( and it's definitely possible ) is that all your time is consumed by looking for food. Like a wild animal you're either grazing or sleeping and may miss out on some of the other pleasures of being out there that you would not have missed had you brought nutrition with you.

Well it looks like I won't be making this epic trek after all. I just got an unexpected Christmas gift...TWINS! I'm gonna be a grandpa in June.

Meet Olive & Elliot

Suddenly it feels like Christmas!
