I decided this year was the year to put together a solid, reliable archery set up. Bought a new brand new Hoyt Ventum 30 and the shop set me up with FMJ arrows. It was time to turn to broad heads. I have always been a believer in fixed blade broad heads, but I have always shot a replaceable blade broad head. After listening to many Podcast, reading many reviews and many post, I settled on a single bevel, Cutthroat broad heads. As a hunter that rarely shoots no more than 1 whitetail deer a year I wondered if I would really see the difference.
Three weeks ago I got lucky enough to get a shot at a nice 3.5 year old, 8 point buck. He was quartering to me slightly, made a perfect shot, went through two rib bones. Left a perfect profile of the broad head in each rib bone. Zipped through him without any trouble. There was a small rock pile behind him that the arrow obviously finally stopped the arrow.
Most all of the edges were rolled over. I did some researching, reading and listening about broad head sharpening. Heard great things about KME Sharpeners and settled on the broad head sharpening package and a cheap leather strop from Amazon.
Following photos are of the original edge as I picked it up off the ground.
Weighed the head before sharpening. Started out at 155.2 grains.
Took a few minutes and a few passes to get the jig set right, but got it to nicely bevel the whole edge.
Weighed the head after sharpening. Weighed 152.9 grains. Lost about 2.3 grains through sharpening.
Very happy with the sharpener and the performance of the broad head. Both edges turned out great, came back super sharp. Will be putting this broad head back in my quiver for future hunts.
