Do people really get their shelter stolen in the backcountry?

Had a buddy telling me a story and I couldnt believe it.

I don't know anyone who has. I have left shelters in view of popular trails a lot without issue. I'm personnaly more worried about things left in camp like solar chargers.

I don't know anyone that has had an issue, I do remember in Cam Hanes book he talked about it happening to a buddy of his.

I haven't heard about any tents but there was a member here who dropped his pack to stalk a deer and had his pack stolen.

I remember reading a story about a guy on an elk hunt that got to his camp and everything but the tent was gone

never had a problem or heard of one. figure the guys in the back country are pretty good guys so have not been to worried about it.

I thought I might have been the only one with this little fear in the back of my head. I have dropped camp off of well used trails and haven't had any issues, but like ridgefire said I like to think the guys hunting back as far as I am have better things to do than dig through my camp.

I have had the same worries before. The reason I bring a camp trailer when I can. Lock it up tight. Gonna be sheep hunting in an area that has tons of hikers. I will bivy in this weekend will scouting but when the season starts I will have a place to put all of the stuff I do not use. Plus a place to re-supply with a bed. The thieves know when the hunters are there and I would assume study there habits so they can rob you to death.Bob.

We had our wall tent stolen and no of others that have had stuff stolen from there camps.

Never had anything stolen, but had a camper shot full of holes, guessing they were trying to hit the propane tanks.

What goes through peoples minds boggles mine.

I came across a six pack of Keystone light in a stream a few years ago. I was in an area so remote I figured it must have been washed down as the cans were fairly dented. I was 3 beers in when the poor bastard walked up on me sunning myself on a rock enjoying the beers he carried 8 miles in. I still feel bad to this day, can't imagine the type of guy that would leave someone stranded in the Wilderness without a shelter. If I were to walk up on someone raiding my campsite miles from the trailhead...... It would get very ugly.

Im sorry but thats funny chit! I would probably have done the same... And if it was my mine in the stream and I walked up on someone drinking it I wouldnt have been suprised. haha

Its never happened to me but while hiking in I passed two guys picking up a bunch of stuff spread all over a clearing just off the trail and asked what was up. They said they had set up camp and while hiking up the trail just out of camp ran into some granola munchers that started flicking them s!#t and and they continued up the trail. Later they came back to their camp trashed and thrown all over the place. Nothing stolen just messed up. Figured the goofballs waited until they walked off and went to work on their stuff.

Can't have nothin' nice anymore without some jerk doing vandalism, theft or criminal mischief on your stuff. The beer story gave me a laugh, who would have thought? Here in AK public trailheads are bad for theft on vehicles left overnight. Anymore I'll get someone to drop me off and pick me up later if I'm going to hit a public trail head for back country access.

On fly out hunts or other remote access hunts I don't worry much about bad stuff happening to my camp. The easier public access places, I keep things pretty tight and go light and fast as possible so I'm not leaving much at camp if I leave a camp behind at all.

I had my truck broken into at a trailhead once. I had all of my gear with me though. All that they took was my cup of change and some discs.

Historically, I haven't worried much in the back country. Anyone coming across my ratty gear left in camp would probably be inclined to toss a few bucks or some spare change into my tent. I guess that's one downside to my new quilt and pad.

Small expensive items I hide near camp prior to leaving for the day.

I worry more s out my truck at the trailhead.

Come on. Were the can perfect looking and clean or all dented up? I think I would have killed you! :)

I have not had any problems, Knock on wood. But I usually camp far from any trails.

I am with Rodney, I worry about my truck at the trail head. I am traveling across the country for the entire fall hunting. So I literally have a spare of just about every thing in my truck and topper. Including different weapons for diff seasons in diff states. Maybe renting a storage unit in every area I hunt for the duration of my stay would be smart. Cant be too much for a few weeks?

Ha. Maybe subconsciously I convinced myself they were dented up. The guy was really nice about it. Poor guy.... But why carry a six pack all that way and choose Keystone!?!

That was me. Still pisses me off. Never had my camp messed with though. (knock on wood)
