Hello,
I have a gift card to Columbia sportswear (includes Columbia, mountain headwear, and prana) and I am thinking about using it to pick up a tent for backpacking.
There are 3 tents I am looking at, all 2 person with a vestibule and 3 season. Mostly I will use it for 2-5 day trips and in September/October Oregon. Eventually I will hunt out of state, but st this time it’s still a pipe dream.
My question is mainly for tent weight.
Tent #1 is 4lb 1oz $321
#2, 4lb 6.2oz $314
#3, 5lb, 1.2oz $224

My gift card is for $308, I’m hoping to put in as little money as possible. What would you more seasoned guys and gals recommend? This will be my first purchase and a starting point that I can build off of.

Here’s some of my current gear.
Kifaru Hunter w/reckoning
Sierra designs Zissou 15 degree bag
Thermarest z lite pad
MSR Pocket Rocket
And some other small stuff.

Thanks,
David

Disclaimer: I'm only a few years into back-country hunting, but: have you looked at the MH UL2 tent? It's highly reviewed and is almost 1.5 pounds lighter than your lightest option listed above: 2lb, 12oz, $336.75 right now on the MH website.

That said, if you aren't breaking camp every day and carrying this thing around with you during the hunt I don't think and extra pound on the way in and the way out really matter all that much...hop on the treadmill and lose 1 lb and save yourself a hundred bucks (to spend on more gear)!

I would analyze more than just weight in your situation. Polyester vs nylon, pole configuration, waterproofness, ventilation, vestibule configuration, coverage from fly, etc.

I run a 2# tarp, but in your situation with wind, rain, and bugs, I'd probably just go with the most cozy tent and not worry about a pound here or there.

Here are the 3 tents.

Pathfinder 2 Backpacking Tent | Mountain Hardwear

Vision 2 Tent | Mountain Hardwear

Does the company sell the big agnes UL3? I really like mine. Its great for one person and all of their gear and you can sit up like a gentlemen in it at night.

Didnt see that it was only to columbia. Nevermind...

It’s definitely something I have considered. But if I can get something somewhat comparable for no investment in my part that would be my first choice. Now if I’m not doing myself any favors by getting one of those tents I’ll gladly move on and fork over the cash on one that’ll work better.

No use with these tents, so take with a grain of salt. Based upon their design I would take the UL if I was only using it solo(huge weight saving for minimal cost), and Ghost Sky 2, if I would ever be sharing. I hate single door tents for anything more than solo.
