Tarptent seems tough to beat in both price and quality. I don't own one but I've looked everywhere and I just can't seem to find anyone that has something bad to say about them. It seems like they are kind of like a poor mans Hilleberg, but I've even read some reviews given by people who own both and they say in some respects they feel their tarptent is a better tent or at least good enough to not need to spend the extra money on a Hilleberg. Im looking at buying a tarptent scarp 1 and have them seam seal it. Without the crossing poles I think it's right about 3 lbs. Crossing poles add 12 oz, and to be honest I dont think you'd need crossing poles unless you're expecting lots of snow or really strong winds.

I also have owned the Stratospire2 for a couple years now. Excellent tent that handles nastiest weather. Got Weathered in (stuckintent) for 2 days at 5600' on this years 14 day Dall hunt. Heavy Rain, high wind, sleet and 4" of snow. The Strato2 handled it all with nary a hicup.

Nuther SS2 fan here!

I'm a big guy and need a lot of headroom and most tents are too small for me, especially if weathered in. The SS2 is quite roomy.

Just out of curriousity for you SS2 guys, is the reason you went with the 2 over the 1 just in case of having to weather storms for day(s) or is there anything else you had in mind?

I like floored shelters 99% of the time but if you take out the inner tent the ss2 is really roomy. And much lighter if that's what your after.

The square footage and height doesn't change.

They are different. This is for sure.

I can put my boots , bow, arrow case and bow case plus my pack on top in one of the vestibules and use the other vestibule for in/ out

Thanks worx53, just wanted to make sure I was not missing something else. Seeing as this is listed as a 2-3 man, do you ever use it for more than just a solo?

Yes. 2 people no problem keeping gear ( packs, boots, etc in the vestibules). Two 300 pounders would be tight.

If you were going to use it it 99% of the time for solo, would you still think the 2 (extra space) would be a better option than the 1?

My snake phobia comes from being bitten by a diamondback as a kid. I prefer the SS2's bathtub floor & bug netting and the fact I can keep my pack and clothes in the tent rather than the vestibule where rodents might get to em. Two well separated walls in heavy wind & rain is a big plus. Just my rationale.

+1 on the Copper Spur UL2. I use it in the ultralight mode without the nest. I think it comes in just under 3lbs.

Not really a fair comparison, a single wall floorless rig vs a double wall floored tent....

Also the SS2 has a tub with bug free nest included in the price and the BT2 does not. Add the optional screen doors to the Bt2 at an extra 60 bucks and added weight, now brings the price to $364.00 for a single wall tent. I Have pulled the nest out of my SS2 (30 sec) and been able to sleep 4 people on fulls size pads in my now single walled tent.

The inevitable condensation issue with a single walled tent and the fact that anything can come in at night turned me off. We spent a night in the mountains near Flagstaff and just used the nest so we could watch the stars (warm night) and it was just plain cool. Use this configuration at the beach for the babies too, works great.
