Tent poles for mountainsmith lt shelter

I don't pack trekking poles, but like the concept/price of the mountainsmith lt shelter. Could a guy replace the trekking pole supports with tent poles (with rubber caps on the end)? I could buy a tent pole replacement kit and make my own. Let me know your thoughts.

Whats a rough cost on the custom poles? I figured I could make some for under $15, but they would be fiberglass and cheap.

Ruta Locura makes custom carbon fiber poles. They're very light and bomber, but they're not cheap. One things for sure, if you're in an area where trees are inaccessible and have no other way to pitch your shelter, having your pole fail can kind of suck.

MSR makes takedown poles that extend as well. I bought a pole for a tipi a few months back from Backcountry.com for about $25.

I would make sure whatever you use is pretty stiff. Flex in your two poles may cause your guidelines to slack. I use trekking poles with mine and there is a fair amount of downward pressure. Pretty good little tent for the price.

These aren't the right height though, but I know they do custom gear so they may be able to make them to the right height (53" and 40") for you.

I have done the cut-a local branch and the trekking pole methods and while I prefer to not carry trekking poles, they make this shelter much faster to set up. If you order custom, make sure at least the long one has some adjustability. Because of soft, hard, flat or uneven ground I don't think I have ever used the exact same length pole. Some of that can be accounted for by pulling the edges in or out but having some height adjustment is the only way I'd go.

I ended up taking some Walmart trekking poles I had laying around and modifying them. I basically took handles of the poles and replaced with a gorilla tape (works great a handle and repair kit) and also took off all unneeded plastic parts. Lightened them up and they are pretty solid.

I like this idea, saves weight as long as you are confident you can find branches suitable at your camps

Quest Outfitters and Tent Pole Technologies make custom sized poles, or you can get the parts from them and make yourself.
