Taxidermy habitat selection

Just wondering for those of you who have done floor pedestal mounts how did you decide on what habitat to have included. I’m having a mule deer mounted but am having a difficult time deciding on habitat.

I prefer the ones where the pedestal is the habitat. Old fence posts with some barb wire, and sagebrush look great if that is the kind of area the deer came from. Pine deadfall, and some juniper.

Just keep it in line with the terrain you shot him in.

Do you have any pics from the area where you killed your deer? Send that to the taxidermist and let them use their creativity and then be surprised! Dan French just did an antelope for me and I’m very happy Maybe you can find some ideas on his website Good luck

I like to try to replicate the terrain I shot it in.i take a lot of pictures of the terrain and give them to the taxedermist and he picks things out I don't notice sometimes.have fun with it.

I do original ideas and keep it in theme with where it was taken.

This axis was taken in Hawaii near the "Garden of the gods" The base and backing is koa wood.

Mayan theme. Wood is cocobolo, a tropical hardwood. I've also used ziricote wood for these ocellated turkey mounts.

I like habitat from the area of the harvest. Fence posts, barb wire and cedar logs gives you multiple mounting options. It’s a bonus when you are lucky enough to find their sheds!
