Looking for a lightweight tarp to keep in the pack for emergency overnighters or to ride out a storm. I like the seek outside DST tarp and the Kifaru sheep tarp. Does anyone run any of these? Or have any other suggestions. Thanks

Cheap, light blue tarp from walmart! Helped keep my meat clean too.

My buddy and I both have one. We've used them for fair weather camping. Been good for keeping some rain/wind off. For emergencies and a permanent place in your pack, I think it would be good. That's what I use mine for. If I were to use it more routinely for camping, I'd want something a little bigger like the SO DST tarp. Hope that's helpful.

Yeah that looks like it would work good! I like the versatility of the dst but it is a little on the heavy side to keep in your pack for an emergency shelter.

SO DST is a great piece of gear. Light and multi functionable. It is always in my pack and is my go to light weight shelter.

DST is a good one. Used mine as a primary shelter on a 9 day backpacking trip last year. I now have a Warbonnet Minifly that is an emergency shelter. 13oz for a 7.5’x11’.

Love the DST. I have spent probably 15 nights under one. Would consider the Gunnison or the Kifaru Sheep tarp as a lighter shelter.

Got to use my Zpacks pocket tarp with doors this past elk season. All I can say is WOW! This thing is crazy light (only 5.2 oz!), and with the added doors it offered me full 360 degree protection (if you don't want the doors it weighs a whopping 4 oz). I originally wanted a flat tarp, but the thought of the wind making the rain "blow sideways" made me hesitate. The pocket tarp serves great for everything I need. It's super lightweight, gives me full protection from the elements, it's easy to set up with 1 trekking pole, and it also has a surprising amount of room for me, plus a lot of gear. This probably wouldn't serve you as well if glassing is your primary use. But as an emergency shelter (or in my case, my primary bivy shelter), this is another great option.

Wow that is crazy light and looks like a slick shelter!

For those with the DST Could you run that tarp with a ridge line and pitch it like an A frame?

It was a successful hunt too, although it was my buddy who connected.

I have several flat tarps from both Oware and Borah, quality tarps and both have a wide array of sizes and fabrics. Borah will generally build a custom size one too if you don't see the size you need

5x7' is the "typical" size most often thought of for an emergency shelter- it'll work in a pinch, but for a few ounces more (and not much more volume)- I'd consider going a little bigger, something ~ 6x8' gives you a lot more options and better coverage

I’ve also been thinking about the little bug out base. Not really a tarp but i like that I could add the vestibule down the road.
