I prefer the tent for rainstorms and bugs and the tarp the rest of the time. Which one I pack is usually a game day decision based on several factors such as time, distance, where camping, solo etc...
I'm a firm believer in a family of shelters but would start with a tarp as they are so versatile.
When going floorless I've found that mice are really only a problem at horse camps or any camp that is bare dirt so I typically camp near ridge tops. Also the bugs aren't nearly as bad there as they are down near creeks.
I've never seen a tick in the Cascades so I'm fortunate there.
