What are the chances of being able to harvest a black bear on an Alaska moose hunt? We will be hunting the western side of the state somewhere between Bethel and Dillingham. I already picked up a harvest ticket and locking tag in case. Would be pretty neat to get a berry bear. We will be getting dropped off at a lake system with mountains around it so im assuming the chances might be there.

Not a lot of bears out in the Bethel area from our past hunts, but they are there. The area we hunted was flat and very swampy, therefore not great bear habitat. Though I did read that one group had a problem griz around, but finally scared it off. Just my limited $.02

Of the three times I've gone I had a black bear tag in my pocket. First year we saw 1 waaaaay up on top of a mountain. Second year we saw a few. 1 was close but we just saw him briefly. This past year we saw a bunch but never had a real good opportunity at one. There's definitely a chance and I would think it would be worth having a tag for sure.

I hunted out of dillingham last year and am going to bethel this year but I think it would be a great idea to have a bear tag. we saw a few in that area last year. I've only had one trip to alaska where I didn't see a black bear.

Appreciate the responses fellas. We will be in some more mountainous areas, so id think would have more opportunities at glassing one up. The awesome thing about being there for an extended time is you never know what you're going to see.

Very true...you just might spot one. I always have a tag in my pocket.

The area you described is one of my favorite parts of the state...been there a bunch. There are grizzlies for sure in that area. Every now and then a grizzly can be surprisingly really dark-colored compared to the norm.

Hope you have a great adventure!
