So I put in for a guided New Mexico elk hunt with an outfitter. Obviously draw odds are not great. I signed a contract and I believe the 2nd week of April ill know if I get drawn.

I stil want to leave Montana and Idaho as my second option if I don’t get drawn. Likely most good guided hunts will be full, but just wanted to know if anyone else has backup plans for this situation where you could still get a quality guided archery elk hunt? I do have one point for Montana. Zero in Colorado.

Purchase a point going into Montana draw and your odds are good for a general tag, then find your outfitter.

Write a big check and buy a landowner tag in CO.

So I can only purchase a point for Montana and still get a general tag later with two points? I think Montana draw due date is before I get my results from New Mexico.

I don't know how much money is burning a hole in your pocket, but I would say your back up options are limited to landowner tags in either NM or CO. I'm not super familiar with MT, but I think with 1 point you're not likely to draw. buying a point this year would be next years app with 2 points. course there's always OTC in CO as your backup...

Incorrect, you can buy a point at the time of the draw

I’m probably going to spend 6k so land owner tags are off the table.

So what type of point do you have in Montana because for NR's we have both Preference points AND Bonus points. You need preference points in order to draw a general tag and, as stated above, if you already have one of those and you buy another with your application this year you have a 95% chance of drawing with 2 points (this is based on last year's odds of course).

If you have a Bonus point those are only good for applying to LE permits, and as a NR you MUST draw a general tag BEFORE you can get an LE permit. If you have 1 bonus point, and 0 preference points you actually still have a really good chance of drawing a general tag with 0 preference points because Montana allocates 25% of NR General tags to folks with zero points...so you actually have a significantly higher odds at zero points than you do with 1 point (1 point is the dead zone right now).

One other thing to note: If you do have a Preference point in Montana, and you choose NOT to apply this year you will LOSE your preference point and go back to zero. In Montana you must apply every year or lose your preference points. (this does not affect Bonus points).

Actually, if you go with an outfitter in MT you can buy two points at the time of application. But, you have to have a signed agreement in place. MT you're better off having zero points instead of buying a single point. If you already have a point you can get another at app time, but even 2 points isn't a guarantee now
