Headed to AK later this year on a caribou hunt. I have a down Paiju 10 by Marmot that has been good since I mainly hunt dry areas

Looking to take a synthetic bag with me this year to avoid the chance of the down wetting out. Was looking at the kings camo XKG Summit. Other suggestions?

Western mountaineering. If you’re afraid of the wet, get the Gortex one.

That said, down gets a bad name for not working while wet, but in reality most treated down works fine, even when wet, and often better than its synthetic competitors by comparison. Most of the “down doesn’t work if wet” comes from pre treated down experiences from older timers, and the advice was never updated for the today’s technology.

Heres some visual aid if you need more convincing.

Thanks the for video, had some good info. That’s why in the past I’ve used decent quality down bags without concern

But a concern of mine is the inability to pick up and walk back to the truck, when you’re in a car bush plane drop off style hunt. The YouTube video also mentions this where if it was bad enough, the guy would just walk out and get back to his vehicle

I'm not really much help, but will give free information and bump the thread so someone more helpful can answer.

I use down pretty much exclusively. I have a 40 degree synthetic quilt to put over my down in really cold weather, the idea being the frost line will not be in the down (think 5-10 degrees or colder).

I have hunted SEAK, the slope, and PWS using down. I have had the foot box wet out from rubbing on the tent, but a contractor bag or rain coat over it fixes that. Pack it in a dry bag.

I only own down puffy jackets and use them in the same places.

Experience matters. If you feel more comfortable with synthetic, get that. If not confident in your ability to mange down, then synthetic might be the better choice. But, down can be managed just fine in AK.
