bringing this one up to the top. I recently picked up the 14x52 and 8x42 after two years with just the NL 12x.
Comparing these three - I have some questions from the field. Anyone with the 8x, did you find the edge clarity to be lower quality than the other power NLs? Anyone who was just running the 12x, and opted for a 2 bino setup - where did you land?
I toyed with the idea for about a year of owning the 8x to compliment my 12x. Especially given the terrain I’m in 99% of the time (desert/ chaparral/ oak brush) and I hunt Missouri once a year in thick hill country. Then, with the release of the 14x, I was more convinced that those and a set of 8s would be the ticket.
The last few days I’ve gone to my usual haunts and had a great time using both the 8x and 14x combo. I think the spread is great for what I do since I don’t use a spotter. I had the 8x in my harness and the field of view is definitely something to make note of. Especially at ranges inside of 700 yards, where the 12x would have taken a little more patience to cover the same area. Stretch out passed 1000 and the 14x are a dream.
The 12x are amazing. I can’t say a single negative about the optic. Objectively, they are kind of smack in the middle for me of being too much horsepower or just needing a bit more juice.
I am planning to sell my 12s. However I’m hesitant to offload them right away. The 8x that I picked up seem to have some noticeably more blurry edge clarity compared to the 12x and 14x. Anyone else seeing this?
