Most stainless steel is not magnetic

Yeah, I guess the magnetic test is not really an indication. I just kind of assumed that maybe it was aluminum because the magnet stuck to all my stainless rifle barrels.

I wonder what other tests could be used? I worked at a metal shop years back and we used the magnet test to distinguish between stainless and regular steel. That worked for the type of stainless we had.

Call Outdoorsman and see if they will just send you the stud and you can do the install... or better yet maybe they would like to have a Canadian rep who could do the work in Canada for them....
other option is to call the fabricator direct. Good people!

Stud machined and installed. Made of 316 stainless. Pressed into hinge assembly. Can be pressed out in minutes to restore binoculars back to original

Ok. Just back in from shop. Base machined from 6061 aluminum. Bottom tapped for 1/4x20 for my quick detach camera bases.

Looks like success. I will remake the knob when time permits with a knurl. Currently the mount is painted but I will clean it up later on and have it powder coated. All in all I have about 3 hours into it. Best part of it is being from Canada I didn't have to ship them away which freaked me out more then doing the job

Think you could slim the neck down, pretty thick but looks great.

Probably could below the stud.The stud is .28" and the neck is .375". Doesn't leave of meat each side of the stud but totally agree I could thin down the center or even run a slot down the center on the wide face to cut the weight even further. I'll give it a try as is........ maybe make a whole new riser when time permits

Yeah the outdoorsmans is pretty thin, nice thing is you can play around with the design pretty easy.

Looks great! What was your setup to press the stud in? If you remake the tower, how about attempting to incorporate the mounting plate into it. That could shave a little weight.

Thanks mtnkid. I looked at that and it is on my list when I remake version 2. The reason I didn't do it the first go around is my solid stock it was machined from was not big enough. Didn't want to buy a 20' length for the required 5" required. I am taking everyone's input though so I can make the next model slimmer and lighter

About to get a stud on a new pair of binos. Found this in my search. I have no experience at this but it looks like it’s doable by yourself. At least the current version has a screw in stud not press in. Thoughts???

My apologies for the necro, but I feel like the information I have is pertinent to this thread.

I recently had my gunsmith clone my genuine Outdoorsmans stud for the Swaro EL. Being up in Canada, the shipping and cost becomes rather high.

Unfortunately, Outdoorsmans will not sell the stud by itself; siting warranty reasons.

As for install, it is very easy and only takes a few minutes. Pop off the Swaro emblem and backing on the bridge. Use fine-tipped needle nose pliers to remove the two jam nuts. There are a few washers that you can let gravity pop out on a flat surface, pay attention to the order they are in. You then need to press out the black bolt that the jam nuts were on. This is easily done using a socket as backing and then a 1/4" socket extension and wood clap or C-clap. Reverse the order with the new stud to reassemble. This is all very quick and easy to do.
