Looking for input and suggestions for a retractable awning for an SUV.......4runner in particular. Looking at something that attaches to a roof basket or crossbars.

Thanks!

Randy

NAPA Auto of all places is offering a bargain one similar to the ARB that gets good reviews. I haven't tried it, but for $100ish it seems worth a shot.

I used 1" conduit attached to my roof rack with stainless u-bolts. Ran the right size tarp out to a couple leftover tent poles I had. Guy lines to the ground. Great shelter from the sun.

I have a 270 Rhino Rack Bat wing on my land cruiser. I have RacksBrax to quickly detach them. Finally (!!!!) i use Gamiviti Multi Bracket to attach the stock rack.

The Bat Wing awning is very functional and is designed to break away (and comes with the replacement parts) if there is too much wind. And FWIW, I have tested that and completed a fix in a matter of minutes.

2nd the ARB, there’s cheaper knock offs but questionable.
been great for the 4 years I’ve had it. chance of wind stake it down! They have the original bag version and newer easy access hard aluminum case. Batwing is great option for lots of coverage, I just couldn’t make it work for length of vehicle.

Search “DIY overlanding awning” on YouTube , there are some really good designs and ideas that are a fraction of the cost of the awnings that are out there.

I’ve been wanting to do one on my 4Runner but haven’t got around to it. I did a cheapo tarp awning setup on my camping trailer but didn’t make it a permanent mount, that way I can set it up on either side of the trailer or the back of the trailer

What kind of trailer is that? I like the looks, I need something similar.

Check out springbar tents. They make one that straps to the rack when you are stopped, very portable and can be used with trees etc if you don't want to attach to the rack. I really like mine.

It’s an Army M101a2 trailer. I picked it up at government auction, cleaned it up, painted it, had a custom canvas made for it. It makes a great camping trailer and overall utility trailer

They look sweet but they're a pain to put up. Customer service manager runs a SlumberJack out of his Mazda CX-5 and he has a hate love with it.

I picked up one of those Slumberjsck awnings on Camofire several years ago. It is a such a pain in the ass to set up, I’ve only taken it on one family camping trip and have never used it since LOL

That's the general consensus lmao. They look awesome, pretty neat once set up - but the setup absoultely sucks. Most hatches on SUV's (those worth anything) don't have motorized hatches to open and close which means any gust of wind and it'll start to close then the weight of itself causes that Slumberjack to just close up.

Can confirm on the slumberjack. Pain to setup, especially solo. It is sturdy in the wind though with all the tie out points. Pop up awning works better in most scenarios except wind.
