Is it legal to be in possession of someone else's suppressor if you have their paperwork? I'm asking because I need to sight in my step dad's rifle since he just got a suppressor. I know the chances of getting caught are pretty slim but I really don't want to commit a felony just because it's easier for me just to take his rifle to the range without having to bring him along.

I know exactly 0 people who have been asked to prove that they are in possession of a tax stamp for an nfa regulated item.

Separate, as far as I understand of the letter of the law: unless you, your father in law, and the suppressor in question are listed on the same NFA trust, then there is no legal way for you to possess someone else’s suppressor in their absence.

As others have said, the legal answer is NO. If he isn’t there or if you are not on the trust, not legal. They are becoming common enough that no one even looks at you having one now. They really are in common use and unless you get sideways with a LEO, no one will check on a stamp.

Thanks. I didn't know what the law was. No one at the range would care but like stated above some kind of run in with law enforcement could make for a bad day. Normally don't have to worry about that but you never know what will happen.

There's one stupid range here in San Antonio that checks stamps. I'd never go there except they do half price Tuesdays and they're way closer to me than the other two. Having said that, I always show them the wrong stamp paperwork intentionally and they stare at it for a second pretending they know what they're looking at then nod.

Legally, I believe only the attorney general and the ATF can require you to show your tax stamp. Private club so I guess they can set their rules, but I bet this could be challenged. With that said, I wouldn't give them my money. Just shoot elsewhere where people behave normally.

Curious, ever ask what the rationale is behind that? Do they feel safer if they see it?

They're getting surrounded by neighborhoods and constantly under pressure to shut them down so they're incredibly twitchy. They've been there since it was nothing but country fields around them of course, developers surround them with houses and all of a sudden people complain about the shooting range. They were insufferable during Covid as well enforcing every little nitpick rule. They're desperately afraid of being shutdown is the reasoning they told me for everything. I never went there until I started reloading, now I have to shoot so much the cost savings in range fee plus fuel and my time add up. They did finally note my account so when they scan my tag it pops up saying to leave me TF alone. Lol
