Suppressor for dummies

Any time I decide I want some new gadget that I know nothing about I put a spreadsheet together to compare options. Helps me learn what specs are more standard and what specs vary. As you can see, I unknowingly started with more AR focused, full-auto rated cans and eventually found the lighter, more hunting focused options.

This was from 2022, lots of newer options out there now. The TBAC suppressor summit data is a good place to compare suppression levels. Sort by SE dB or SE dBA.

The AB A10-7.62 was my recent "budget" suppressor purchase. Very happy with it so far.

Right now, I'd be looking at that can and these others:

Otter Creek Polonium 30
AB Raptor series with reflex
UM Whisper Pickle (eta June 2025)
Others mentioned here already.

I’m a dummy at all of this but I’ve recently bought a couple of cans and I love them. I’m shooting a .308 and I’m going to have it threaded so I can put my 30cal can on there. It’s a Resilient SimpleMan and I was in it around $700 after stamp and I only waited 6 days on approval. I’ll be able to provide more intel after I get my barrel threaded but all of my buddies run suppressors and say that it only helps when shooting long(er) range.

I'm not a suppressor guy. Just wear ear protection when shooting! I have no problem. They make ear protection that actually improves your hearing compared to not having ear protection on.

When it comes to muzzle-brake.....I'm all in!!!! I recently bought a 300 Win which is reknown for having extremely hard kick. With a sidewinder break, mine kicks less than my old 270....kids could actually shoot it! I also have no problem shooting a box of shells. Another benefit to the sidewinder is it kicks so lightly that I can find game almost immediately after my shot because it hardly raises. Take a look at some of the youtube videos and it may change your mind.

There are quite a few advantages of using a brake vs suppressor. I could really care less about more noise when a brake actually improves my shooting ability.

I'm going to disagree with you and say there isn't anything a break does that the right suppressor can't also accomplish.

Also animals are much more relaxed after you pull the trigger allowing for easier follow ups or harvesting multiple targets.

To each there own, but I won't willingly go back to shooting unsuppressed. It truly is game changing

Realunlucky, I would be curious how a suppresser reduces recoil and if so, how much?

A suppressor is not a brake in regards to effective recoil reduction but some with the new brake endcaps are closing the gap. The recoilx brakes work very well.

I guess it comes down to how important reducing noise is to a shooter vs recoil. Anyone shooting a larger caliber would likely say that they can enjoy shooting a box of shells at a range with minimal recoil vs having themselves pounded by the same box of shells without a brake. Using a suppressor only cuts noise. I really don't see any advantage over a brake when using larger calibers.

I would guess that the same guy using a brake on a larger caliber will shoot tighter groups than the same guy using a suppressor that merely only cuts noise.

I'll be investing my hard-earned cash on a brake....you can have your suppressors!

Love my Scythe TI. I have about 5 or 6 cans and love them all. Also love my omega 30 and hybrid 46m for my big caliber guns. Highly recommend a trust and setting up an account on Capitol. They can do it all for you and then you buy and they ship right to your door! No brainer!
