A couple of recent threads about quilts has brought up supporting sponsors. I am all for supporting sponsors and will within reason, but if I am able to get the same quality product for considerably cheaper I will probably go that route. I am not a rich man and I know the majority of you are not either, so money matters. My question is how much money is your tipping point? $50, $100, $200? To some degree it will depend on the product for me, for example a $50 difference on a stove is a huge range of products but on high end optics it isn't even tax. I'd have to say for myself that if a product is under $400, I would expect even sponsors to stay within $50 of competition with comparable products. $401-$800 within $100. $801-$1500 within $200. $1500+ within $300. Am I being unreasonable?

Hard to say and depends on the product. I would say a savings of 15% makes me think twice but I don't only look at price alone, while it is important so is customer service and product reviews from people I trust not just anyone or magazine.

Same here, I'm all for saving money but I don't only look at price alone, customer service and product reviews from people I trust are very important things in my book and I don't mind paying a little more for the peace of mind.

^^^ Agreed. One more thing I would like to add, and it probably doesn't apply to the said mentioned quilts, is I feel very strongly about purchasing American made products. All things being equal if it cost me a little more money to purchase an American made product that is also being manufactured by a little cottage/mom-and-pop operation, that's where I'll be spending my money.

There are certain intangibles that make a purchase "feel good". I hate buying something and not having that feeling. Price plays a roll, but doesn't dictate everything.

frankly it doesn't play into my decision making at all. whats the best gear i can get for what i need is what it comes down to. i happen to use a few of this sites sponsors gear, but its because its the best gear i can get for what i need. i will recommend and offer my reviews and opinions when asked based on that . that fact that there a sponsor is neat but thats about it. i dont make any money from rokslide, hell half the time i cant even put up a comment or a couple pics with out them getting blown up ;)

I agree with all of the statements above. 15% is a good rule of thumb. I also would be willing to pay a bit more for American made. I realize that there may be other factors to consider based on the product but price does matter.

Price plays a pretty important role for me as I have a limited amount to spend, but I also make sure to compare like products. It's not like I'm comparing a 0degr. Quest sleeping bag to a 0degr. Western Mountaineering bag.....don't even get me started on backpacks :)

No clearly I wouldn't expect 0 degrees slick bag to be in the same price bracket as a 0 degree Ozark trails but they are not the same caliber of product.

one thing i would add is that any sponsor rokslide would have should carry some merit in its own right. i find this pretty unique to this web site in how discerning they are with there sponsors being only gear the owners would personally use or endorse. not how much money they have. Kuiu is a great example

Except the owners have used Kuiu and admit they make good products. So really it's nothing like Kuiu lol... More like why Ozark Trails sleeping bags aren't a sponsor.

yeah there all sporting the new ultra....

No one is questioning the quality of gear the sponsors put out but other companies might be putting out equally fantastic gear or better for cheaper.
